A Tour that Makes you Feel Good

A Tour that Makes you Feel Good

I have always enjoyed a bike ride while in Bali but I have recently experienced a bike ride that I can highly recommend.

I rode on the best bikes and had soooooo much fun I had to share it as these guys are quite new and they are a husband and wife, she's from Australia so we got on famously and he's from Holland, but they don't do this full time they actually spend most of their time helping out the villages with education on the dangers of burning plastic, rubbish (they even have put rubbish bins in a village that they empty themselves on a weekly basis). She teaches the kids English and they have many other projects in the pipeline. They actually live in a village which they will happily show you and are the only Westerners in the whole area. If you have any children's clothing they will pass it on to the village kids.

Their cycling trip is around the Lake Batur and you also get to go through the small lanes (gangs) of the village and they are welcomed by all the children that know and love them. They'll tell you all about the architecture and the family temples and can answer any questions. They even said if the didn't know the answer "they'd phone a friend" - their friends are ALL Balinese!

We were picked us up in a luxury vehicle and took us on a 2 hour drive to the mountains, a way I have never been before - it was along the coast and through the rice paddies which I got some beautiful photos before we even got there.

We got a choice of breakfast when we got there and they gave us a small 600ml water bottle and then said that we could refill it in there office and asked if we could please use the same bottle all day as they do not want to encourage plastic waster, they even reminded us to fill it up again before we left, no charge.

After breakfast we went out on inflatable canoes, this was SOOO much fun, a little scary at the but once we got the hang of it it was great, I got a little wet though, but probably cause we hadn't done this before.

Then we had an Indonesian lunch, it was filling but not much to write about.

Then we headed off on the Bikes and those bikes are amazing, I didn't feel scared on the bumps and the road we went on had no trucks, no cars, a few motorbikes (about 2 came along) and it was difficult on a few hills but I felt a sense of achievement. When we got half way, all these children were walking to their village all in school uniforms, they all knew the couple and chatted and laughed. Later the couple explained to us that the children walk every morning and afternoon to school (it's about 4 Kms!!!!) I couldn't believe it., they were very small children, about 6 or 7 years old.

This is a couple that you have to meet, they are dedicating 10 years to this area to help it out and they seem so happy taking people on their tours to share what they are doing, I just feel good inside that I went. You can see how much money they actually spend on the kids and stuff out of their own pocket and their tour is so cheap for what you get so they really must just dig deep into their own pockets. Go and have a look at their website www.c-bali.com. I highly recommend doing one of their tours - just so you can meet them!

Majestic Lake Batur

The Kintamani region is on every tour guide’s agenda. And one of the most breathtaking places to relish in the scenery is at crystal clear Lake Batur . Gunung Batur (gunung means mountain) is an active volcano and has wreaked havoc here more than once; the worst incident took place in 1926 when more than 1000 villagers died. There are tours that will take you to the top if you are ambitious, and it is recommended that you be accompanied by someone.

Do you ever think of a place that you’ve been to, and immediately associate something unpleasant to it, no matter how wonderful the rest of the visit might have been? Well, I did. The area around the lake and the temple is so great that I knew we’d be spending quite a while here. There were no restrooms to be found, and guess what? I needed one. Luckily, I thought, the Batur Garden Restaurant was right there, surrounded by glorious flower beds with promise of more to come. Chuck and I walked into the restaurant which was completely empty. I asked to use the restroom, and was categorically refused. As we were not scheduled to eat here, we offered to pay something for the use of the facilities; again, stubborn refusal. Eventually, they relented as we purchased a couple of drinks.

The waters of the lake are essential for irrigation to the rice fields which abound around the area. The lake as well as the mount are considered sacred to the Goddess of the Lake, Dewi Danu . From afar, one of the temple buildings looks as if is floating on the lake. It’s a totally amazing sight. Aside from the incredible riot of colors provided by the flowers, we had the pleasure of meeting some interesting creatures, not the least of which was a mongoose. I completely fell in love with him or her, and imagined having one as a pet. The mongoose had been brought to the garden area by his keeper or trainer, and he was rolling himself around the outside of his cage like a liquid pancake. There were 2 or 3 completely obnoxious birds who provided raucous sounds that were not particularly inviting. Another man came with his monkey, and by this time, monkeys might as well have been lovable puppies. This one had an earring on and was advancing rapidly through a slice of papaya. I kept a safe distance from the snake and his charmer. This is a great place to return and spend more time exploring. We did not stop at Penelokan which is considered the best spot overlooking the lake and the volcano as it lies close to the road which leads down to the caldera.
