The Blue Hole

The Blue Hole

I love diving in San Pedro, but to be honest, there are good and bad aspects! Most of the good dive sites are only minutes away from your hotel, which means that a two-tank dive doesn’t eat up your whole day. You are back at your hotel with plenty of daylight left to explore the island. The downside is that all the dive outfits like to dive at these close sites, so at times, popular locations like Shark Ray Alley can be an underground Grand Central Station, which takes away from the serenity of diving.

Then there’s the Blue Hole, which is a must for all divers. It’s a deep, and consequently short, dive, but well worth the 2- to 3-hour ride (in some choppy water) to get there. The Amigos website (http://amigosdive.com/bluehole.html) does a good job at walking you through the day.

But I remember the awesome feeling as you descend to over 130 feet and start swimming in between some stalactites and looking at some huge sharks - way cool!!! Lunch is on Half Moon Cay, where I was told I could see some great booby’s… birds as it turns out.

Amazing adventure diving. Not for the faint -- large sharks swimming nearby. Wonderful underwater cave views. Went to 150 feet, my deepest dive ever, considering it was only my third dive ever.

The Blue Hole

The Blue Hole is probably the most famous dive spot in Belize. It is a wonder of nature that reaches depths of over 400 feet. The Hole is enclosed by an almost perfect circle of coral, and divers go as deep as 150 feet to see the stalagtite formations in the caverns below the surface.

The boat ride to the Blue Hole from Ambergris Caye is about 2 hours long and leaves at 6am. The ride can be rough, so I recommend taking a motion sickness pill -- even if you don't usually need to.

You will be fed breakfast and lunch by the boat staff (we went with Amigos Del Mar). We stopped for lunch at Half Moon Caye, where you can see red-footed booby birds as you walk along conche shell-lined paths.

We were taken on two other gorgeous dives after the Blue Hole off of Half Moon Caye. They are drift dives, which means that the boat picks you up wherever you surface. We saw turtles, eagle rays, toadfish, gorgonian trees, and lots of other great stuff.

The cost for the whole day is about $150 US. It's worth it.
