Dartmouth is a town about 12 miles from my home town of Kingsbridge. It is a harbour town and, like Salcombe, attracts hundreds of boats every year. The town centre is located right on the water, with cafes, shops and several nice pubs. The Royal Avenue Gardens, with their bandstand and fountains, also located along the seafront, are lovely especially in summer, and attract a host of musical performances throughout the year. These are most frequent and feature bigger names during the Dartmouth music festival (usually middle of May) and the Royal Regatta (end of August). Both of these festivals feature fun fairs, boat racing, live music and many other family activities. Just along the coast at the mouth of the river Dart is Dartmouth Castle. A popular visitor attraction, the castle often plays host to musical and drama performances. Dartmouth has a very strong naval connection, and the Royal Naval College is located on the main road into the town. Across the river in Kingswear, a steam train runs to Paington in Torbay, and there are copious boat trips out to sea, and up the river to Totnes. Two car ferries run back and forth across the river to Kingswear all day. If heading from Kingsbridge and the South Hams, I suggest taking the coastal road, which leads you through villages and farmland along the Kingsbridge Estuary before taking you over the cliffs past the beaches and through coastal villages such as Torcross.
