Kauai Tubing

This adventure was, by far, the best one of our entire trip. It is a different experience going through the tunnels and caves that were dug out for the irrigation for the sugar kane plantations. I would recommend going to a timeshare presentation because you will end up getting a percentage off of every activity you go on.

This was a 3-hour trip down the old sugar cane plantation irrigation canals in rubber tubes with a team leader, water shoes and gloves, and night lights on our heads for tunnels. We had a lunch at a waterfall and jumped in. It was a great family adventure!

Tubing through a plantation canal

You start your adventure in an army jeep that takes you on an hour ride to the tubing start point. The guides are very informative, and you stop at an overlook and get to try some sugar cane. Once you arrive, you are fitted with gloves and a helmet with a flashlight. Water shoes are required, and they can be rented for $2 a pair.

The leisurely tube cruise takes you through a waterway consisting of ditches and tunnels that were engineered and hand dug in 1870. At the end of your tubing adventure, you will be guided to a picnic area for a picnic lunch next to a natural swimming hole. The cost was approximately $100 a person, and the total time was 3.5 hours. For more pictures, see their website at http://www.kauaibackcountry.com/.

Mountain Tubing Adventure

This was absolutely the best adventure. Our guide George was pure entertainment from the ride to the top of the ditches to the incredible ride itself to the lunch and to the ride back! We wore bathing suits and were fitted up with gloves and a miners helmet which we turned on going through the tunnels. Our group of 12 soon became fast friends as we tubed down the miles of ditches, tunnels and flumes. The leader of the pack (behind George) changed constantly depending on speed and the position they found themselves in the ever changing current. We heard periodic shouts of "bottoms up" as we floated over areas that were a bit shallow! This old sugar plantation is no longer operative - but tubing down the old irrigation ditches is one adventure we will not soon forget. We enjoyed a picnic lunch in a very picturesque setting before heading back. This tubing adventure is definitely on our list of 'things to do' whenever we return to Kauai.
