Hawaii Movie Tours

This is a full tour that includes both ground and air. We were staying in Kappa, so they picked us up at the resort around 8am. We toured in the 4x4 until noon, and then stopped for a picnic lunch at Anini Beach. They provided turkey sandwiches, chips, drinks, and a dessert. After lunch, we headed to the Jurassic Park site. To reach the site, the four-wheel-drive was needed, and the ride was very bumpy. Around 3pm, the 4x4 tour ended, and we were driven to the helicopter pad for our 1-hour flight.

This helicopter flight covers the whole island. The highlights were seeing Manawaiopuna Falls, now known as Jurassic Falls; the Olokele Canyon; the stunning Waimea Canyon; and the towering cliffs of the Na Pali coast.

The 4x4 vehicle was equipped with a TV and surround system to show you the titles of the myriad of film and television productions filmed on Kauai. The first stop was the historic Ahukini Landing and pier, Kauai's first harbor and docking port. Several movies were filmed here, including Six Days and Seven Nights. Then we headed to Wailua Falls, the site where the beginning of Fantasy Island was filmed. Later we stopped at Coco Palms, where Elvis had filmed three movies.

One of my favorite memories was the 4x4 Off-Road Adventure Movie Tour. As a lark, we decided to go on this adventure and I am delighted we spent the money on this six-hour journey. More information on this adventure can be found at this website.

Our hospitable driver and tour guide were local Kauai folks and had fantastic stories to tell us about the filming of some of our favorite movies. Our courteous driver picked us up at the lobby of our resort around 10am in a huge four-wheel drive van. We picked up some other passengers at another hotel and went to the Movie Tours headquarters in Kapaa. Interestingly, the van is equipped with a small surround-sound VCR and TV for our movie-watching experience. The tour guide started with the movie and by the time the driver got to our destination, we would be exactly where the movie was filmed. We meandered around the island of Kauai and saw bits and pieces of close to a dozen hit movies, maybe more. The silver-screen hits included Outbreak, Jurassic Park, Blue Hawaii, South Pacific, Donovan’s Reef, Six Days Seven Nights, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and many more.

A picnic lunch was served at Lydgate Beach Park consisting of a deli sandwich, macaroni salad, chips, fruit, and a cookie. Bottled water and soda were available during the entire day free of charge, along with sunscreen and bug spray. After the delicious lunch, we traveled on dirt roads into Kauai’s interior to Kipu Ranch. We took a short hike into the lush terrain where Raiders of the Lost Ark was filmed and played on a rope swing over one of the rivers; our guide encouraged all of us to take a spin on the swing and we all enjoyed it. As I recall, the adventure ended around 4pm.

We hit a lucky day; we actually observed filming of a car commercial at the head waters of the Wailua River on Kuamoo Road. This was an expensive outing, but well worth our money!

Hawaii Movie Tours

Hawaii Movie Tours offers different tours at different prices. We took their Standard Land Tour, which costs $95 pp plus tax for adults and $76 for kids 11 and under. It might sound expensive, but take in the fact that this tour lasts about 5-6 hours. Plus, they feed you lunch!

The other types of tours they offer are:

  • 4X4 Tour- An off the road experience.
  • Internet Special Tour- This tour includes either the Land Tour or the 4x4 Tour AND a helicopter tour.
Since we only did the Standard Land Tour, we'll focus our attention on this particular tour.

Board a van that takes you to many different locations around the island where movies were made. While riding in the van and on your way to your next movie destination, you'll get to view clips of movies scenes on their monitors.

Some of the movie scenes locations they take you to are:

  • Historic Hanalei Pier
  • Gilligan's Island Beach
  • Coco Palms Resort
  • Sleeping Giant/King Kong Mountain
  • House from Honeymoon in Vegas
  • Donovan's Reef
  • Jurassic Park
  • Six Days and Seven Nights
  • ...and so much more.

Another highlight of our trip was getting a coconut from the Coco Palms Resort. By the way, if you don't have enough room in your suitcase to pack a coconut, don't worry. You can mail it home. Seriously. We did this, but it wasn't cheap. It cost us $12 to mail our medium sized coconut home. It was worth every penny.

Then of course, there's lunch. We stopped at a lovely location, Anini Beach. We had half of a turkey sub sandwich, chips, drinks, and a dessert. We found this spot to be so beautiful and peaceful, we decided to come back and spend a whole day there later on during the week.

By doing this tour, we found out so many new and interesting things. I'm sure we would have never discovered all of these tidbits info on our own.

For instance, we wouldn't have found the most perfect beach spot (Anini Beach) to celebrate our family member's birthday, if it hadn't been for our lunch break with Hawaii Movie Tour.
Some other things we found interesting was seeing Clint Eastwood and Pierce Bronson's homes.
We also know the absolute perfect spot to take a picture of the Sleeping Giant/King Kong Mountain. Believe me, we would have never discovered this spot on our own.
And of course, lets not forget about where some of these movies were actually taken. You wouldn't believe some of the locations and props they used for their movies.

Overall, we had a wonderful time with Hawaii Movie Tours. Hey, if you see Raimie and Marty, tell them Aloha for us.
