A Perfect Day!

We are locals and had friends from England visiting. They all had been here before so we were looking for something different to do. Everyone loved boats and we had rented from Granville Island before - so it was the natural choice. The woman on the telephone was extremely helpful and we were able to reserve out boat for the time we had worked out. We were lucky and had an absolutely beautiful day!! All the paperwork was waiting for us and it was filled out without delay so we could get out on the water. After a safety review and boat operation review the guys helped load our stuff and us and we were off. We didn't go very far before we realized this boat was not handling well and we were not happy with it. We immediately returned to the dock, where the staff met us so see what was wrong. They had us a different boat in seconds - helped us switch our stuff, got us extra coolers for our lunch, extra ice to make sure our picnic food stayed cold. Got a new contract signed and adjusted the time (so we didn't lose the 20 minutes coming back) As soon as we pulled away from the dock the second time we knew this boat was perfect for the 6 of us. We spent the day going around Stanley Park, all Coal Harbour, downtown, around the cruise ships then under the Lions Gate Bridge and Iron Workers Memorial Bridge up into Deep Cove where we tied up to the dock and had lunch. Made use of the washrooms provided at the park then headed our way home. As we arrived the staff came out to assist us, making sure we were securely tied up, helping us unload our stuff and asking about our day. The rest of the paperwork was completed very quickly and we were off. Words can not describe how perfect a day we all had.

Granville Island Boat Rentals

According to the owner the summertime is very, very busy. It's best to get there early and secure your rental. However, we visited Vancouver in September, when we could walk up to the Granville Island Boat booth and get what we wanted early in the afternoon. The fact that the sky was overcast probably helped us out, too. It was certainly chilly when we pulled into the harbor, the cool wind blowing across our cheeks. But it wasn't too cold. And it was wonderful having a lot of the water to ourselves.... In fact, this is a great way to see the city.

Our small boat puttered under the bridge as we looked at the twinkling Vancouver skyline. We waved at people running through the park as we began to pick up speed and go farther out. Beyond the tall buildings, orange construction cranes dotted the shoreline. They looked like giant toy giraffes to me, with their necks reaching up to the sun. We went past shrimp boats draped in nets until mountains rose on one side of us, tufty clouds balancing on top of their crowns like Russian fur hats. We stopped for a moment to soak the sun into our skin, and the water looked as black as oil to me until the light cut as fast as diamonds through an underbody of swirling greens. A seal poked his nose up from the depths and stared at us for a moment until satisfied we weren't very interesting. We floated on a sea of glass.

A boat rental makes for a very pleasant afternoon. If you go with friends and split the rental, it's not too expensive. The owner at Granville is full of tips and obviously enjoys his job. He frowns upon alcohol in his boats, but you can get intoxicated on the views here. This activity is worth the money.

Granville Island Boat Rentals

It may seem a little daunting to rent a power boat, particularly if you don't have much experience, but don't let that stop you. This was a fantastic way to tour Vancouver.

Call early in the day (even if you want to go later in the day). If you call by 10am, you are guaranteed a boat. We called at around 4pm and got on the waiting list for 6pm when a lot of the boats were coming in. We showed up, got a quick orientation, and were off. We rode around False Creed, around Stanley Park, and out along the coast. We had a 15' outboard, 40-horsepower boat. It got a little rough, but that just made the ride even more fun. We loved the fact that seals came pretty close to the boat, plus we got some great shots of the city skyline.

One note of caution, watch out for floating wood. We were warned, so I was pretty alert . . . and sure enough, I had to avoid a large log. A couple of funny sights: another small boat with about 10 people fishing in it in the middle of the harbor (they couldn't even sit down because the boat was so crowded) and the dog beach near the entrance of False Creek (there were about 20 dogs of all sizes playing on the beach and in the surf).
