The class is always the same: a series of 26 postures, repeated in the same order to gradually stretch and strengthen every muscle, ligament & joint in your body. Each posture is done twice - first for 1 min. then for 30 sec. with a rest in between each one. Here's the catch: the room is heated to roughly the temperature of the sun or about 100-115F. This takes some getting used to but, believe it or not, it really helps. First of all, muscles relax quickly & completely in the heat and secondly the temperature forces you to concentrate & focus on your breathing.
So you're probably thinking "This might be fine for 'hippy girl' here but not for me" so here's some background on me. I'm a stunt performer and a pretty serious athlete-type. Most of my training comes from weight lifting, running, swimming & biking (pretty traditional, conservative sports). I started doing Bikram yoga to help with my flexibility and received two unexpected bonuses, #1 - It's a butt-kicking work out that anyone can do and #2 - My many, many, many old injuries and creaking joints began to feel much better. Bikram is for anyone because you only go as far as YOU can go.
Mats and towels can be rented on site for $1.00 each but remember you will need one towel for class and one for the shower. Bring a large bottle of water & drink at least 1 litre an hour before class, don't eat too much a few hours before class (some fruit is usually enough), and have a full change of clothes. You will be amazed at how much you will sweat. After my 1st class, my fingers were actually pruned and I could wring out my clothes and towel. Come early, relax and if it gets too hot just lie down until you feel better.
Bikrams yoga has become very popular in Vancouver and there are at least five schools now (I think). This one on Alberni St. is my favorite although Yaletown Yoga is also good. These guys have another location but they don't have any showers there and you will most definitely want a shower after class.
Classes are offered Mon/Wed/Fri at 10am, 12pm, 4pm, 6:30pm and 8:30pm, Tues & Thur. at 6am, 10am,12pm, 4:30pm, 6:30pm, 8:30pm and Sat & Sun at 8:30am, 10:30am, 4:30pm and 6:30pm.
A drop-in is $17.00 but they give you a deal on your first class.
