Between Christmas and New Year's, you can see Costa Rica's version of bullfighting in a stadium in Zapote, a neighborhood in San Jose. Around the stadium there are food vendors, rides, games- it looks like a county fair from the States. And in the stadium, all afternoon and evening, is bullfighting, Costa Rica style. No bulls are actually harmed, though. Tons of men, and more women each year, wait in line to go in the arena with the bulls. So there are about 100 people in the arena, and they let in a bull, which charges about for a while, occasionally runs into a person, and then gets led out when it's tired and not feisty anymore. People ooh and aah when someone gets hit (they're usually not seriously hurt)- it's kind of like watching a car race for the accidents. If you're really brave you can go in with the bulls- I preferred to watch from the bleachers.
