The Butterfly Farm

We made reservations the day before for a bus to take us to the Butterfly Farm. The drive took about forty minutes from San Jose, but it was interesting looking out the windows at the countryside as we passed many coffee fields on the way (You could combine a trip to the Butterfly Farm with a trip to Cafe Brit though we did not choose to do so). The Butterfly Farm itself involved a two hour long tour that I found interesting because I have always thought butterflies are beautiful, but I have never known anything about them. We went into an area where many butterflies were flying around their natural vegetation, and this was the best part of our visit. There were not hundreds of butterflies everywhere as I had expected from the brochure, but we did see some very beautiful butterflies resting on the large green leaves in the natural greenhouse. It was a nice, half-day excursion that I know my young son would probably have enjoyed had he been along with us on our vacation. We also met the owner who had moved to Costa Rica in the late eighties and made it his home. We found him to be very helpful and interesting, and we enjoyed talking to him about his adopted country. The bus ride, tour, and entry fee cost $25.00 per person.
