Irazu Volcano National Park

The Irazu Volcano is the highest active volcano in Costa Rica at 9,175 feet above sea level. Its volcanic activity has been documented since 1563, and its last violent cycle of eruptions was from 1962-1965. Irazu is 50 km east of San Jose, and 31 km northeast of Cartago. It is open from 8 am to 4 pm and is about $6 per person.

Very pretty, wear walking shoes. Self-guided tours.

And remember to park your car facing the exit! It's a rule, JUUUUST in case that thing starts erupting.

Volcan Irazu

Volcan Irazu is one of the huge volcanoes forming the backdrop of the central valley in Costa Rica, and it's about 2 hours from downtown San Jose. It's an easy half day excursion, and definitely worth the trip. The crater itself is something like a kilometer in diamter -- absolutely enormous-- and it is still smoking sulpherous gas into the air. Be sure to get their earlier in the afternoon before the mist settles down on the mountain, or else you won't see much at all. If you continue walking along the path, you'll come across a strange, toxically sulpheric lake which few animals can claim as a home. Take a seat, enjoy the view, and whip out your binoculars for some birding.

Entrance to Irazu is 2 dollars and is open most of the year.
