To put it simply, the deep sea fishing is world class. The world record marlin was caught off Mazatlan: 996 lbs! About 26 miles out, you encounter a rift of debris that runs for miles across the water. Because the small fish stay there for shelter, the big fish go there for lunch. We trolled there most of the day. At one point we caught a small fish that really excited the First Mate. His English was not so good, but we understood "baitfish". He cleaned the fish, whose flesh looked like liver, threw the guts into the water, and baited 4 lines with the flesh. Within 5 minutes the feeding frenzy was on! At one time, all four lines had fish on them! We caught a nine foot sailfish, which now hangs in Willhoite's Restaurant in downtown Grapevine, Texas. We also caught 41 dorado, also known as dolphin fish or mahi-mahi. We gave away most of them, but took some to a local restaurant, Costa Marineras, on the beach north of El Moro tower. They prepared them 4 different ways: smoked, grilled, scampied, and deep-fried. We paid for drinks and appetizers while we watched the sun go down. It just doesn't get any better.
