Description: This former Islamic college has stood as a shining example of classical Islamic architecture and design since the 16th century. Sunni Islam bans representations of humans or animals, so here you’ll find gorgeous tilework and intricate calligraphy in abundance on the arched doorways, the walls and columns. A central courtyard decorated in carved cedar, marble and stucco holds the cleansing ablutions pool, where worshippers cleansed themselves before entering the nearby prayer hall. You’ll look back on your own dorm days with fondness when you see the 130 bare-bones dormitory cells surrounding the central courtyard.
