International Bazaar & Port Lucaya

The International Bazaar was very interesting to visit. There are a lot of crafts and local souvenirs to be found and if you are looking for that perfect souvenir to bring back, look here. Some of the merchants are very pushy, but that seems to be normal on this island. Visit the perfume factory while at the bazaar. You can create your own personal perfume there. While driving to the International Bazaar, you'll find locals trying to sell you local foods alongside the road. It's worth it to try their local cuisine.

The International Bazaar

The International Bazaar is one of the main attractions in Freeport. There were quite a few inexpensive souvenir shops here where you could find some great deals. The bazaar also houses a local straw market and some restaurants. The bazaar is supposed to have different themed shops from around the world. Unfortunately, when we went, most of the shops here were closed and had not reopened from last year’s hurricane. The section of the bazaar that had the most shops open was the Oriental section. There were three separate shops open here. All had oriental clothing, fans, bags, and shoes. They also had the best deals on souvenirs in these stores.

Thursdays during the summer they have the Junkanoo Festival. There are many locals who dress up in native costumes, carrying around drums and other instruments and playing island music. Overall, the experience was fun, but I would recommend visiting The Port Lucaya Marketplace over this one.

The International Bazar and Freeport.

The grounds are beautiful, teaming with tropical plants and shrubs. Most of the people here are very friendly enough and for the most part everything was on the up and up.The shopping here is not necessarily the best deal to be had and many of the things you will find here are imported from elsewhere. We only decided to pick up a couple of decorator plates here, only to discover better and larger decorator plates by the same manufacturer, for 30% less in Orlando Florida.

We did find better deals in the shops right behind the shiney white building at the International Bazar. This area was a lot more of what I expected to find here.Narrow alleyways snake between shop where you can find quality goods at a reasonable price.More importantly you can stop to look at the colors of the gardens.

A word of caution though,The International Bazar is the only place in the Bahamas that I have experienced a problem with a local. While waiting for my wife outside a drugstore a local resident tried to convince me to accompany him, alone to sample grass.Refusing that he offered me a sample, again alone,of a cuban cigar.Again I refused, and I could tell he was sizing me up to see where I was carrying my wallet.I wasn't carrying a wallet so he seemed to get a little confused.I turned and entered the drugstore and he followed me at a distance of only one foot. When I realized he was behind me,I turned and he was forced to pass. This person was trying to get me alone to mug me for certain, and all within one hundred feet of the local constable's office.Be careful.

International Bazaar & Port Lucaya

The International Bazaar and Port Lucaya have huge market places with hundreds of shops offering everything you'd want to buy including native crafts, fine jewelery, perfumes/colognes and just about anything else you could imagine. Next to the International Bazaar is the Island's large casino.
