A couple thousand years ago, the Romans fed Christians to the lions in arenas like this one. But all we saw were about a dozen not-so-ferocious kitty-cats scattered all over the stands. The arena is used today for bullfights, which usually start in April. When the arena or amphitheater was built 1900 years ago, it could hold 20,000 fans. During the medieval times the arena was turned into a fortress and three towers have survived from that era. A sampling of graffitti on one of the tower walls reads: Belfort, Lefebvr Lucien, 1928. In the 1800s the arena functioned as a town within a town, with about 200 houses crammed inside its walls. Climb the towers, walk along the edge and take one snapshot after another to form your own panoramic collage!
