A Beautiful Classic Oregon Beach

I love visiting this curving bay beach because it has so many interesting nooks. It is a broad driftwood filled sandy strand with a freshwater stream flowing into the sea at the South end. The beach is surrounded by pine forested hills which form a perfect backdrop for the old Victorian lighthouse keepers home which has now become a bed & breakfast run by the state. See their website. Several rooms with different views to choose from. The homesite is up a trail from the beach. Continuing further up the trail to the rocky point is the lighthouse itself. The tour takes you up close and personal to the mechanical workings of the light and lens. The lens itself is very complex because of rows and rows and layers of glass structure formed into an huge upside down glass jar shape. It is cathedral-window-like to look up inisde this glass strucure. Remember though, this is an Oregon beach so come prepared to dress warmly and bring your camera.
This site was built in 1896 by materials delivered by ship. There were no roads to this site at that time.

Heceta Head is a beautiful sight. A great picture from near or afar, Heceta Head is one of the most recognizable landmarks in Oregon. Its location on the coast is very convenient as well. You can walk around the lighthouse, check out the grounds around, head down to the beachfront to look at tidepools when the tide is out, or check out the museum and gift shop. It can be pretty windy up there, so make sure you bring a jacket and possibly rain gear. You can sometimes spot whales from the lighthouse too, so bring binoculars and your camera for when the sun sets.

Heceta Head Lighthouse

This is the brightest beacon on the Oregon Coast. Factoid aside, it's a good place to visit (even if you're not a lighthouse junkie) and not at all blinding during the day. You have to take a nice stroll up from the parking lot to get there, so you'll get some exercise. Once you make it up the hill, green fields surround the house, perfect for lolling about. And strangers tend to bond when they descend the sea cliffs part way intending to bird watch only to be hit with the stench of years of piled-up bird doodie layered upon the offshore rocks. A chorus of "Pee-yoo!" quickly goes up. The lighthouse itself is beautiful, and seems very proud and proper the way it stands on its crest of the land. As with other lighthouses on the coast, you can enter the house while volunteers have it open and nose around as you try to imagine what it must have been like to be the light keeper’s daughter (or son).

This is the most photographed lighthouse on the Oregon Coast. When you see it you'll know why. Its setting is spectacular. Viewpoints are conveniently available on the highway.
