Jackson Hole Mountain Resort

Jackson Hole Mountain Resort is located in Teton Village, in the heart of the Teton Mountains, about 20 minutes from downtown Jackson Hole, and 40 minutes from the JAC Airport.

The majority of skiing is at an intermediate to expert level, so if you are a beginner (like I am), be aware that only about 10% are beginner trails. There are 116 trails, over half of which are expert runs. Even if you're not Jonny Moseley or Shaun White, Jackson Hole Mountain Resort is still worth a visit for any skiing/snowboarding fan!

A full day Lift ticket for an adult costs $72. For those of you who are not skiers, but would like to ride the gondola for a scenic view, the cost is $8 per person, and well worth the reasonable cost. There is a small cafe restaurant at the top of the gondola, and the view is magnificent!

Jackson Hole averages 38 feet of snow per year, and the resort is open from December to early April.

Temperatures vary greatly from the valley to the top of the mountain. When we were there in early January, it was as frosty as -24 degrees during the day, and warmed up to a daytime high of 2 degrees. That's super cold, even for a fellow Chicagoan somewhat used to freezing temps. Brrr! What was strange was that as we went up higher on the gondola, the weather actually got warmer. The top of the gondola was beautiful, and a complete temperature contrast to the frozen tundra below.

You can find more information about the ski resort on their website, www.jacksonhole.com

This is a busy ski resort frequented by Olympic trainees apparently, but also suitable for beginners. If you are not a skier, the ski lift ride to the top of the mountain (and back down) is well worth it.

Jackson Hole Mountain Resort

Jackson Hole is a world-class resort known for offering expert terrain. However, the Tetons offer more than cliff-jump entrances, wide bowls, and narrow bump runs. Less advanced skiers can find plenty to do, too!

While I have been skiing since I was 7 years old, I live far, far away from the mountains. If I'm lucky, my ski "season" is 3 to 5 days a year. Still, I'm a strong intermediate. I like steep, fast, and groomed blues, though I'll venture into the black diamonds and get down fine... most of the time. Jackson Hole offers a ton of trails that suited my skill level and a lot more that left me feeling sheepishly humbled. The place is so spread out, I think anyone could find the perfect run at this HUGE resort, even if they're not an expert. A nice thing to note is that the greens and blues are clustered together on one section of the mountain, so lower level skiers won't get in trouble by taking a wrong turn.

As for my kid... He has been on skis several times, but he is a weaker intermediate than I am. While he did go down many blues in California and Colorado with no problems, we made a mistake when we took him up several lifts for his first run at Jackson Hole. Let's just say all blue runs aren't created equal. At JH, there is even a creature called the double blue!

After the first fall, our son developed a major confidence problem. We realized we should've started on green runs until our kid got used to his "ski legs." Or we should have scouted out the conditions at this resort before pointing him down the mountain. Since we didn't do either, the only thing we could do to save his trip was send him to... SKI SCHOOL.

I was surprised to learn that Jackson Hole does not offer 1-hour private lessons, and a half day private was $300-plus. The best option for us was to have our son join a group for $80 for a half day. Kids are grouped together at the Cody House according to their age and ability. We were lucky because my son's "group" consisted of just two boys and the instructor. My son spending the afternoon with another kid on his level and a patient teacher guiding them both through the snow was worth every penny. Sticking to the Apres Vous lift, my son quickly got over his fear of the mountain and rediscovered his sense of control.

Skiing Jackson Hole is no joke, so my best advice would be to make sure you aren't flippant about your ski level—or your child's ski level—as you seek out the trails that will be the most fun for you. I highly suggest a lesson to get you oriented to the mountain... and a helmet rental is a must for kids.

What a great place. The view was breathtaking. You have to ski at least one day at Targhee. It was awesome and a better resort for the kids. BUT don't let the hype scare you away from the HOLE. I am an East Coast skier and had heard how hard this mountain was. If you can ski a blue in any East Coast resort, then there is more than enough terrain to keep you busy. Sure there are some areas only idiots go, but I could ski most of the mountain with no problems. Great lifts, no lines, no crowds. It was so big that I never felt crowded. You spend more time skiing and less time in line.

Jackson Hole is a great place to ski for intermediate and upper level skiers. The terrain is perfect for a wide variety of skiers, and the steeps and bowls are unlike those found anywhere else in the USA. Because Jackson Hole has a fantastic ski school (be sure to request Beau Schiner or Rob Sloan), the entire family will have a good time either learning to ski or working on improving their skills. On a sunny day the views of the valley below are unbelievable! The low base elevation of 6311 feet means that most people will not suffer from altitude sickness.

It also offers a wide variety of non-ski activities in a beautiful setting. Take a day off of skiing and try snowmobiling or dog sledding. Of course there is plenty to keep non-skiers busy too with all of the outdoor activities, shops, and spas in the surrounding area.

In addition Jackson has a great apres-ski scene with the Mangy Moose at the heart of all of the action.
