Bayshore Boulevard

Bayshore Boulevard – running along the coast of the Tampa Bay – should really be the first choice for any visitor to Tampa who is in for sports activities, or just spending time in the fresh air. The seven-mile-long promenade is famous for its sidewalk right on the shores of Hillsborough Bay and is a favorite for runners, joggers, walkers, and in-line skaters. You can either take up a sport yourselves or just watch the acrobatic numbers people do while in-line skating.

The route itself leaves what is the western edge of downtown and heads in a southward direction, passing the old (relatively old, that is) villas in Hyde Park, a few high-rise multi-apartment buildings, retirement communities, and mostly Methodist churches, completing its course at the Ballast Point Park. The promenade deserves attention not only as a place for a quite evening stroll or a place where you can go in for sports, but also for a breathtaking view from the promenade across the bay to the downtown skyline which is really superb.

In addition, the Bayshore Boulevard also has some nice and quite inexpensive restaurants where you can take a seat in the open air, order yourselves a drink and a plate of seafood stuff and just do some quality people watching. Add to it a considerable number of the hotels (though mostly geared towards the business travelers) and you have everything a person might require. . .

"Blvd. of Dreams"

One of my favorite places in the world is the Battery in Charleston, S.C. Although it reminds me of the Battery, Bayshore Blvd. is longer and quite different. There are grand homes and the yards are green and beautiful.

The entire boulevard extends for over seven miles from downtown all the way to a gate to Macdill AFB. I loved following the road right beside the bay. I love to look at water. There was no traffic. There were runners and walkers. There was a side street called Interbay that kept me right beside the water the whole way. I hope the people in those special houses don't feel as if their privacy is invaded too much by onlookers like me because the houses and their grounds can't be ignored. From the front one can't realize how deep the grounds are and exactly how huge some of the houses are. Also along the boulevard there is a restaurant where I wish I had eaten. The Colonnade on the Bay at 3401 Bayshore advertises that it has had a family tradition for fresh seafood since 1935. I know that there are other boulevards of dreams, but Bayshore has a sign claiming to be one, and I certainly enjoyed walking and riding there.
