Farmington Hills, Michigan

The actual beach is smooth, with flat rocks instead of sand, which was a challenge to walk along. (Yep, I pocketed a few to take home for my garden.) Instead, take a seat on the boardwalk in the late afternoon and spend hours watching kids rollerblade, families stroll, and little old couples dressed to the nines out to enjoy the day.
We stopped at one of the cafés on the beach and had to endure rude service and drunken British football fans, but otherwise enjoyed the sunset. You might want to avoid the beach cafés . . .
