Mount Rushmore

The biggest tourist attraction in the area is Mount Rushmore. It draws more people than almost any attraction in the USA.

The faces carved in granite are impressive. The expressions can be read according to how the viewer feels. If you are upset at the way the nation is behaving, the faces seem to mirror dismay. If you are happy with the way the nation is going, the faces seem to be content. Let your emotions color your experience and it will remain with you forever.

Stand at the railing and take your photos. Marvel at the sheer power that it took to carve these men into the rock. Enjoy the beauty of the mountains. And don't forget to stop by the gift shop and grill. September in the mountains can be chilly in the mornings so the coffee and tea are welcome additions.

If you plan to see the Crazy Horse monument also, see this one first. That way you will be able to visualize the Crazy Horse one better since it is still under construction.

The monument is just that, monumental. I took plenty of photos but the weather was foggy and only a few came out great. The site is amazing and I am awestruck as to the engineering that went into the carving of the figures.

On the way to the monument you will go through Custer and other small towns that go out of their way to provide touristy snacks and purchases. This whole area is working towards your enjoyment. Prices I found were not out of line.

The parking permit of $8 is for an annual permit. It's too bad I couldn't put it on a rental car.

The website for the monument is at Mount Rushmore with the area website at Rapid City/Black Hills.

Mount Rushmore is about a 20-minute drive from Rapid City through the hills, just outside of Keystone, a little collection of tourist traps and places to eat. The monument area recently underwent a multi-million dollar renovation to its visitor facilities, including the construction of a rather substantial parking ramp that is convenient, but also appears somewhat out of place in teh hills. Parking up close to the monument costs $5, but it can be a long walk if you choose to park in one of the no-fee areas. Mount Rushmore itself remains an impressive work, but it would be hard to justify spending a LONG time there, since once you've seen it, you've seen it.

Mt. Rushmore is absolutely impressive. Driving to the sculptured mountain you come upon occasional outlooks where you can see the four presidential faces from a distance. I didn't have much luck getting any extrodinary photos from these lookouts, though I did try.

There was adequate parking at the National Memorial on each of the occasions that we visited. A little climbing is necessary to get from the parking lots to the public areas.

A large gift shop and restaurant sit opposite the actual monument, surrounded by a large patio-type area. Available on the patio area are those wonderful silver binocular-type machines that you put money into for better viewing of the sculptures.
