The Shore Path

The Shore Path

The shore path begins near the Bar Harbor Town Pier and gently winds along the ocean front. It's rarely crowded and the perfect place to escape the tourists in town. As the pier disappears from view you'll have a wonderful view of the open ocean the four Porcupine Islands that surround Mt. Desert. Continue walking past beautiful mansions with landscaped yards and flower gardens. Most of these are private residences so stay on the path and don't trespass in their yards. The actual shoreline is public so feel free to take a walk down on the rocks and explore the tidal pools or simply stop and watch the waves crash against them. It's a lovely place to go as the sun is setting after dinner. There are even a few park benches scattered along the coastline so you can sit back and relax.

Running the Shore Path and up to the Park

I have run all over the island, but my favorite runs always include the Shore Path in Bar Harbor. The Shore Path is a one mile path next to the ocean on one side and beautiful, old homes and hotels on the other. It is located next to the harbor and is easy to find from anywhere in Bar Harbor. I generally run down to the shore path and then up to Acadia National Park. There is a small stretch near one of the roads leading to the visitor center that overlooks the ocean and the town. You have to go up some pretty steep hills to get to this part of the run, but it is worth it. The part of the run between the Shore Path and the Park is nothing of note (mostly highway with a large area for runners and bikers), but if you want a challenging run you need this part to add distance.
