Bar Harbor Bike is the best place to rent a bike. It's close to the park entrance. We asked a few locals and this was the place that all recommended. We did check some other places out, but B.H. Bike seemed to have the highest quality bikes and the most savvy employees.

Park Loop Road--Acadia National Park

The scenic drive along Park Loop Road provides access to ocean cliffs, Sand Beach, Thunder Hole, Cadillac Mountain, Jordan Pond, and other scenic overlooks and trailheads. On the day we took the drive, dense fog obscured most of the views. Stopping at Thunder Hole, we were disappointed in the"crashing waves and thunderous sounds." Basically you wait with other tourists at the railings surrounding a large crevice in the rocks hoping for a few waves to come in. Further down the road is Otter Cliffs, which has a trail along the rocky coast. Heading inland, we proceeded to Wildwood Stables, an area for stabling your own horses to ride the Carriage Roads or taking a horse-drawn carriage ride. Further on was the Jordan Pond House, renowned for afternoon tea and popovers, The Bubbles, and then on to Cadillac Mountain road to the summit. On a clear sunny day, especially in the fall, Park Loop Road would be more impressive. It does give you a good overview of the eastern half of Mount Desert Island, good for the first-time visitor.

Park Loop Road--Acadia National Park

This is a drive at your own pace that takes you to the major sights and trails of the Acadia National Park. It includes a drive along the rocky coast and to Cadillac Mountain. The ride is great and the views breathtaking. There is no wonder that it is so popular with visitors. This is one of the most beautiful national parks we have seen!

Thank goodness for my family that I tend to do some research before we go on vacation. I probably would have missed this part of the trip altogether, if I hadn't seen it written up in one of my tour books. The Park Loop Road is 27 miles long, wending its way through the mountainous terrain of Acadia National Park. There are various pull-off locations for your own personal enjoyment and picture-taking opportunities. There are also many trails for hiking. Take your time and fully enjoy the breathtaking spectacle that unfolds before you. If I could only bottle it and take it home with me, but I think taking souvenirs is also prohibited by the Park regulations (just kidding!). There is a fee for entering Acadia. A modest sum of $10.00 for a 7 day pass. If you are going to be in the area for a few days, you will definitely want to make another trip. One of the most interesting stops along the way was called Thunder Hole. It's name tells you something - the waves roll into an inlet, where the water has carved out a cave. The pressure of the water coming in and rushing out again produce gigantic waves and sprays, as well as "thunderous" noise. Sounds like a thunderstorm. Just sit on the rocks high above and watch and listen, but be prepared to get wet! There is also a road leading up to Cadillac Mountain, the highest point on Mt. Desert Island (1,527 feet) and the East Coast. This is a great trip for kids and adults alike!

Park Loop Road--Acadia National Park

We first drove to the Hulls Cove Visitor Center to obtain maps and plan the sights we would see. There we watched a short orientation video that detailed the history of the park and John D. Rockefeller's efforts to conserve the landscape. Then we drove through the Park Loop Road, after first paying the $10.00 per car admission fee which allows access to Park Loop Road for seven days.

We stopped at Sandy Beach to take a walk along the Ocean Trail. This is the only sandy beach on the island and the walk took just ten minutes. The view of the mountain behind a pond on one side and the ocean lapping away on the other side was amazing.

We next stopped at Thunder Hole which has a pretty landscape of slabs of pink granite. The granite forms a natural cave so that when the tide crashes in waves, the water is forced through a hole creating a thundering sound. When we were there, however, the tide was low and the waves were minimal. But you could faintly hear towards the bottom of the steps a slight sound of thunder.

We then returned to our car and enjoyed some spectacular coastal scenery along the Park Loop Road. We thought of getting lunch at Jordan Pond House but we would have had to wait two hours. The restaurant was pretty in a rustic, woodsy sort of way, and looked out upon the pond. There was also outdoor seating available, but we decided not to wait the two hours because we wanted to see Cadillac Mountain before sunset.

When we left Jordan Pond House, we saw the Bubbles which are rock formations. It appeared to be a large round rock perched perilously on a narrow pointy rocky mountain. I believe that there are various theories about how that rock formation came to be.

After passing the Bubble Rocks we made a sharp right to go up to Cadillac Mountain. The place was crowded with many tourists, and the various cruise ships had brought busloads of people. Nevertheless, this is one of the quietest, most peaceful places that I've been to. I had read somewhere that the heart chakra of America is located on Cadillac Mountain, and I could easily see why someone would believe that. There is a little curved walkway to go around the top of the mountain and there are breathtaking views of Bar Harbour with all the tiny cruise ships docked in the ocean. We thought that Cadillac Mountain was the highlight of this trip and we had to return there.
