Kayaking in Sarasota

Kayaking in Sarasota

Kayaking has become a popular activity for visitors and locals alike. Almost Heaven Kayak Adventures is one of the largest and most popular eco kayaking companies in the area and offers a variety of kayaking adventures, including the South Lido Mangrove Tunnels Tour. It's located just south of Anna Maria Island & Longboat Key and north of Siesta Key.

The South Lido Tour is a shallow, protected, bayside trip with minimal influence from wind and currents. We will travel through a series of mangrove tunnels and lagoons that are abundant with sealife. Along the way, there are a variety of live shells on the bottom, crabs, sponges, starfish along the mangrove roots, and some of our tropical birds. At some point, we will travel just north to Otter Key, a large protected mangrove island, where manatee and dolphin frequent the area.

The tour is 2 ½ - 3 hours long and includes basic paddling instructions. It’s a great eco tour for beginners, as well as advanced kayakers.

For more information or to book your kayak adventure, contact Almost Heaven Kayak Adventures at 941-504-6296 or via the Web at www.kayakfl.com.

Kayaking Sarsota Bay from Downtown

Kayaking in the downtown Sarasota area has some neat little treasures. There are three primary options: 1. Bring your own; 2. Rent from City Island (at the end of Ringling Blvd) downtown; or 3. Rent from one of the area outfitters (see list at the end).

The best places to drop in a boat downtown are:

-Off City Island
-From the backside park on Lido Key (follow Ben Franklin Dr to the south end of the Key)
-Off Bird Key Park

Wherever you put your boat, the best things to look for include:

--the mega-McMansions all around the bay. Look for celebrities to be around their pools, if you're lucky, at the south side of Longboat or on Bird Key --The mangrove tunnels on and near the south end of Lido Key

--Manatees, fish, and birds all over Try to stick to one side of the intercoastal or another, not just for the views, but also for the speedboats. Fishing from your kayak can be rewarding as well. Just be sure you know what you're doing. Don't want to have a tarpon dragging you all around the Bay!
