Old Town Santa Barbara is a great place to walk around and shop. After you have had a big meal, it's nice to take a walk and digest. There are many shops and it was very busy on the weekend.

State Street

Apart from the beach side, this is perhaps the most popular destination if one is visiting Santa Barbara. There are lots of shops on this street, arts, antique, specialty, cultural, kids, clothing, accessories, etc. All you can name, it can be found on this street. In addition, the Paseo Santa Barbara Mall has traditional department stores such as Macy's and Nordstrom where you can fulfill all of your shopping needs.

State street is also filled with lots of different types of cuisine: American, Chinese, Japanese, Italian, Indian, Thai, Seafood, etc. There are also bars and clubs on the other end of the street heading towards the beach side. The upper end of the state is mainly made up of more upscale shops, and there's a Saks Fifth Avenue department store.

Museums, church, and historic hotels are also a part of the State Street touring experience. The walk from one end of the street to the other end would normally take 25 minutes, and it's worth the walk passing through shops and restaurants. If you prefer not to walk, you can also take a bike taxi, where the driver will "bike" you around the city.

The prices are right in this delightful cozy shop. Saw everything from a songsheet that read MAMMY'S LITTLE BABY LOVES SHORTNIN' BREAD, to a beaded Charleston-type hat. We bought a used book called Hollywood Color Portraits which depicts all the old divas of the silent screen and the early days of Elvis, including Kim Novak, Marilyn Monroe, John Wayne, etc. We also eyed the jewelry, but moved on.

State Street is the "main drag" of Santa Barbara. Although a bit overly trendy in places, it's an interesting street filled with specialty shops, cafés, restaurants, sights, fountains and people... even the occasional street performer.

Busy night and day, State Street ends at the Wharf where open market vendors abound by a fabulous ocean view. Plan to spend a day wandering around.
