You start out driving up these beautiful mountains (they don't call them the Smokies for nothing), and you then stop at different spots along the way, going higher and higher until you get to the top--MAN, WHAT A VIEW! You can see forever!

It is a very scenic park. There is a large Sugarlands visitor's center in the park to get info and maps for walking and hiking. There is a large scaled map to view and decide what areas of the park interest you and your group; also inside is a small museum. They have a program with scheduled times, so a ranger can tell you about things going on each day. There is also a gift shop inside. The view of the Smoky Mountains is amazing. There are waterfalls, wildlife, birds, and lots of trees and blooming flowers. At the top of the mountain, you stand on one side, and you are in North Carolina, and on the other you are in Tennessee.

This is a wonderful place to take a picnic, relax, and enjoy the wildlife all around you. We saw bears and other animals several times. Cades cove is the best for seeing bears. Dollywood was a real treat. Ober gatlinburg sky lift was nice. And the Mill in pigeon forge with all the little shops and diner is a must. We just love it down here in this area.

Smoky Mountain National Park

A large national park on the border of Tennessee and North Carolina, it includes a wide range of features and potential activities.

Must-see areas include Cade's Cove, a mountain valley that is maintained as it was in the 1920's, when the residents were moved out to create the park. Plan on spending most of a day taking the auto tour through Cade's Cove -- this park has the greatest number of visitors of any park in the national park system, and most of them want to see Cade's Cove. The auto tour route is a single-lane one-way road that circles the valley, and usually the traffic is bumper-to-bumper. There is no good way to escape the traffic.

Another good drive is the Roaring Fork motor nature trail, which begins and ends in Gatlinburg. You can also drive across the park to Cherokee, North Carolina with a stop at Clingman's Dome, the highest point in Tennessee. There are many hiking trails in the park as well -- the Applachian trail also crosses the park.
