Skiing/Snowboarding/Tubing at Massanutten

We were there in the first week of January and even though the temperatures were relatively warm, (mid 40s) and it hadn't snowed for some time there was a good cover of snow and all runs were open. There were no long lines and the slopes weren't crowded. Massanutten is best suited to beginners and intermediate skiers and we all had a great time. All runs at Massanutten are lit for night skiing and there is a choice of day, twilight, morning or afternoon lift tickets. Tickets range from $66 for the extended day on a weekend down to $26 on weeknights. Children, seniors and the military get lower rates as do owners. Equipment rental ranges from $43 to $19. The tubing park is a lot of fun and costs $18 per person for a two hour session. There are eight lanes and sessions run from 9am to 9pm. No skill is required and anyone over 36" can have a great time.

Skiing and Tubing

This year we gathered up 12 of our favorite family and friends and headed out for a few days of skiing. This resort is perfect for both beginners and those of us that have a few years of skiing "under our belt". The ski school accommodates anyone from beginners to seasoned skiers who just want to brush up on some skills. We recommend that you enroll your child/children in the school prior to your arrival. The night before "school," you have the opportunity to pre-register (get skies, passes, etc.) so the next morning is not as rushed. The more able skiers in our group skied the morning and met up with the kids later that afternoon. It worked out great for us. At the time of this writing, we felt that our toddlers (four year olds) were too young too ski for a full half-day and placed them with an off-site babysitter, which was costly, but it allowed my husband and I to ski together for at least one day. If you have younger ones, the resort will provide you with a babysitter list (if asked). They can’t recommend any one sitter, but will provide you with the information. We conducted a few telephone interviews over the phone and were fortunate enough to meet with her upon our arrival. The kids had a fun time meeting new friends and we were able to enjoy the day knowing the kids were in good care. The resort does offer programs for younger children, but we couldn’t get the schedules to coordinate. So if you have younger kids and can’t find a program to suit your needs, there are other options!

We did, however, take all the kids, including the four year olds, tubing. This was fun for everyone. The lines do get a little long at the top and it does get a little confusing, but there are plenty of people up there to control the groups and assist as needed. Tubing tickets are best gotten the day before for Gold Key members. Otherwise, get there early, tube later in the morning (to avoid icy hills), and wear your snow gear to keep warm!

The drive up to the ski resort/tubing facilities took only a few minutes and we were never hard pressed for a parking spot. Don't let the fact that Woodstone sits on the bottom of the hill instead of at the summit dissuade you. It wasn’t a big deal and worked out just fine.

Book a week there and enjoy!!!

Whether you are a beginner or a pro, this resort has great slopes. My six-year-old has been skiing for three years and has taken lessons, and now he skis like a pro! This resort has it all! Fun for the whole family, romantic getaway for two, relaxation if you want to go it alone. Activities for every age. This is our sixth year visiting this resort, and we will be there again next year. Give it a try - I think you will agree it is a GREAT vacation spot!

This is the first time any of us have skied and the experience was great. We didn't take the classes (we don't know if that was good or bad), but everyone seemed to catch on okay. Our teens caught on VERY QUICKLY and helped us older folks out with some pointers. We only went skiing in the night sessions because of lack of experience (we didn't know how long we might want to devote just to skiing), cost (cheaper for night session only), and because we did tons of other things in the daytime. It is an experience we will repeat, hopefully soon.

Snow tubing was great. The lanes were fast enough to be thrilling but not scary. Having divided lanes made it feel more secure knowing that you were going in one direction. The ride back up on the lift was part of the fun. A slow ride to enjoy the view. It did not snow while we were there, but they would blow snow at night and kept the lanes open every day. If you decide to try this one, make sure your hat is on tight.
