Massanutten probably isn’t the best place to ski/snowboard, but it’s definitely worth visiting for a week just to experience the entire place. Since I’m in love with snowboarding, it doesn’t much matter where I ride, but I really did enjoy Massanutten. They had some fun, interesting runs, and it definitely helped that it snowed about 4 or 5 of the 7 days that we were there. The only thing I thought was a little weird is that they had Easy Street, their beginner terrain park, next to the more advanced trails and their more advanced terrain park next to the bunny slope and tubing.
The first night I went boarding, the conditions were pretty icy. The next day, though, it snowed and was all powder. It stayed pretty nice the rest of the week. Friday night was kind of wet ‘cause the weather was being schizophrenic between snow and rain, so some of the trails had very inconsistent conditions: one part of a trail would be powder, another part icy, and another part would really slow you down ‘cause it was completely wet snow, but I had a blast anyway. The other nice thing was it didn't get crowded too often, especially if you went night boarding. It was like the mountain was yours. The lift employees were really nice as well. I even got into a little snowball fight with one of them. It was fun messing with them.
Other than snowboarding, the overall resort was an enjoyable, serene, quiet place to stay. It doesn't really seem to be a party mountain resort like some. It's more of a chill place to relax and take in the nature around you. It was definitely one of those places that gravity seemed to want to keep you at. I didn't want to leave, of course, and go back home to Maryland to do the work thing - blah. The view was gorgeous, and the deer were everywhere and would just about walk right up to you. There were so many things to do there, you wouldn't really have to leave the place for anything.
The place we stayed in was Summit at Hillside. It's definitely a comfy place, complete with two rooms, two bathrooms, a Jacuzzi, a fireplace, a kitchen, etc, not to mention a nice straight view of the mountains, and to the right, a view of the slopes. But, hey, I would have been happy with less than that.
Outside of the resort, of course, the area had plenty to offer. Skyline Drive, which spans across the top of the mountain for you to drive along, and plenty of interesting beautiful caverns to explore gives you plenty of eye candy. Don't forget your camera; unfortunately, mine was broken.
