Located right downtown at the corner of 7th Street and Nicollett Avenue (or The Mall), the IDS as it is most commonly called, serves as the cornerstone, the set-piece, of the business and shopping district. Connected on all four sides to the vast Skyway system, wherever you go in downtown Minneapolis, you will eventually go through it.
Despite being a "high-rise", it is a human magnet. A giant atrium, built in the center of the block between the IDS and its slightly lower counterpart, the Marquette Inn, it is a meeting place for the city, not unlike the clock in Grand Central Station. There are numerous shops, banks, and restaurants all directly accessible from the Atrium, not to mention a bus and transport information kiosk, which is a boon to visitors.
The Observation Deck
Don't miss the Observation Deck on the 53rd floor, which offers the best view of the Twin Cities.
