Mall of America

It's not a visit to Minnesota without a visit to the Mall of America, especially for a huge shopping nut like me! I am used to huge malls and such from the NY Metro area, but I was not ready for this. It was H-U-G-E! But no mall is too big for me! I did a good bit of shopping and definitely took advantage of the lack of clothing sales tax in MN. I didn't ride the roller coaster, as it didn't seem to be running, but Camp Snoopy looked like it'd be lots of fun, if I were a few years younger. I took a second trip to the mall before my flight out, for some last minute shopping and to meet up with some friends for coffee -- it was a good time!

What can be said about the Mall of America (MOA)? Besides being big, I mean. Besides the shopping, amusement park, and nightclubs, MOA is also a place for exercise as people come to walk the mile long circle during the winter. Leave your kids in Camp Snoopy as you shop the four anchor stores (Nordstroms, Bloomingdales, Macys, and Sears) and the hundreds of specialty stores. Go to a movie or visit Underwater World and pet a shark! Eat at the fun and unusual Rainforest Cafe or Planet Hollywood. End your day by bowling at Jillian's Hi Life Lanes or enjoying the yuks at Knuckheads Comedy Club. You can see, do, and buy almost anything here. Why go anywhere else?

Mall of America

Mall of America is the largest under-one-roof shopping mall in the United States - it lost out to Edmonton, Alberta's "West Edmonton Mall" in the "world's largest" sweepstakes. There are some 4 miles of corridors within the complex of 400+ shops and department stores clustered around an indoor amusement park (fun fair) in the central courtyard.

This is, in many ways, a shrine to shopping and consumerism. You can come here and spend days wandering around, listening to local music groups -- sometimes well-known rock stars -- eating, people-watching, and maxing out your credit cards.

The place has become so popular that Northwest Airlines and Amtrak both offer package tours to the Mall, where you'll find hotels just spitting distance away, a wedding chapel, if you just have to get hitched, and "attractions" galore, among which are the following:

Camp Snoopy - an amusement park including an indoor roller-coaster

Underwater Adventures - voted #1 "shark encounter" and Minnesota's largest aquarium with over 3,000 species of sea life.

LEGO Imagination Center, a 4-storey play area for the kids with Lego bricks galore to play with.

Cereal Adventure - built by General Mills, this is a children's amusement center focused on breakfast cereal (!!)

Jillian's Hi-Life Lanes - a 12-lane bowling alley and every type of video game you care to mention.

NASCAR Silicon Motor Speedway - a VR NASCAR racetrack that is amazing to see.

The Rainforest Cafe - Eat in an amazingly real-looking tropical jungle

and the list goes on, up to and including a 14-screen megaplex movie theater.
