The Beach @ Tybee Island

The Georgia coast is rich with history and beauty. Tybee Island offers both! From historical forts and lighthouses to miles of sandy beaches, Tybee offers something for everyone.
You won't find waterparks and amusement parks here (thank God), but there's several excellant seafood restaurants and plenty of affordable lodging.
Tybee is a nice diversion from the "tourist-trap" beach!

Tybee Island

Described as "Savannah's Beach," Tybee Island is about 30 minutes east of the city. As you head out US 80, you can imagine that it probably gets pretty congested in summertime. That wasn't a problem for us, as the Saturday morning following Hurricane Charley's passage appeared to have gotten rid of most of the traffic. But with the skies bright blue and sunny, we thought the weather and the possibility of some high surf made the trip seem like fun.

A little island community, it reminded me somewhat of Cape Cod, combining the permanence of a little seaside town with the transitory feel of vacation life. We spend most of our time at the city beach near the northeast corner, outside old Fort Screven, which stood guard over the outlet of the Savannah River downstream from the city. You reach this area just as before the road turns south to the town.

You're right on the Atlantic here, not a sound or bay. The surf that day was nothing special, not the huge swells we thought we might see--Charley had passed too far out to sea to leave many traces--but walking up and down the shore through the surf was pleasant. The pace of Savannah is hardly so frantic that you'll feel the need to escape, but if you're itching for the beach, come here.

Tybee Island has changed much over the years. Gone is the old Desoto Beach Hotel, to be replaced by condos, condos, condos. Tybee Island is becoming overcrowded, and the whole atmosphere has changed. Before long, it will be wall-to-wall condos and little else to do.

We have taken many trips to Tybee Island over the years, and it has changed a lot. Gone is the Old Desoto Beach Hotel, replaced by condos. From everything we saw on the last trip, there were more condos to come. Tybee is no longer the "Redneck Riviera" and is becoming condo central. I hate to see the changes, as the laid-back attitude is disappearing and high-dollar living is on its way

This is a great beach for families and couples. Unlike Miami Beach, there is no nudity here so its great for families. The beach is also good for children because it stays at about 3 feet high for at least 50 yard before it starts to get deep. Also by the time the waves get to the shore they have melted away but the further you go out, the waves are higher and great for both surfing and boogie boarding.

The sand is very fine and powderlike and there is no real trash on this public beach. It's very clean.

Glass bottles are not allowed on the beach nor is public drinkins so if you have cans of beer they must be in a cozy so as to not show what you are drinking. If you bring bottles with you, I suggest you also bring cups so that when the police come by you won't be ticketed.

The best thing is this beach is open 24 hours a day so you may enjoy an evening on the beach as well. They also have swinging benches for you to enjoy with your spouse.

Finally, its close enough to Savannah (18 miles away) that you don't have to stay in Tybee. They do have a lot of places you can rent which start at $139 a night depending on where you stay. However, I recommend staying in Savannah because you have more options of things to do other than the beach.
