White-Water Rafting

You have two choices in trips, the upper river and the lower river. The upper river has a nice set of class 2 to 4 rapids and is a fun trip. The lower river is just a float down the river without any significant white water. When you have a child under 8, you're stuck on the lower river. It's a nice, relaxing trip; the views are pretty; and you get the chance to swim in the river if you choose, but the fun is on the upper river. It's not high-end white water (like the new river in WV), but it is fun and a great thing to do for an afternoon!! You really need no skill for either trip--just to enjoy!!!!

The young bucks that run these rafting companies are renegade comics/adventurers and we loved them! We played, we competed, we learned. . . I was begging my fellow rafters to take one more hit on the rapids every time we'd roll through some white water (and they obliged me. . . once)!

We paid $35 per head to take a rafting trip with USA RAFT (recommended) down the Pigeon River on a white water rafting trip that lasted a bit over an hour.

The 5x7 shot of us in the rapids cost us $10 (owie). . . and it was SO worth every single cent. This is for kids eight and up, but they have a mellower rafting trip for families with kids around six that was about $20 per head.

White Water Rafting on the Little Pigeon

I had never been whitewater rafting before. Being the un-athletic, bookish person that I am, I was hesitant. I was fearful of spilling into a cold river. All I can say now is...When can I go again?

We traveled for an afternoon trip on the Little Pigeon River. We were outfitted with life jackets, helmets, and paddles, and told to wait. We would be assigned to a raft with another group and a guide. Since our group of three are rather - let’s be nice - out of shape, we thought they would pair us with some strong, athletic types. When we saw the other family we knew...we were the athletes of the group!

We were bused to the river and given guidance on what to do and how to survive. Rule #1, listen to the guide. Rule #2, listen to the guide. You get the idea.

Our guide was fantastic. He had us paddling in rhythm and working as a team. He was the lead guide for that outing. They released seven rafts on the Little Pigeon river. Ours was the only one that didn't get stranded on a rock, flip, lose passengers, or spring a leak.

We didn't shy away from the rough water, either. We all loved it. I'm planning my next summer trip.
