The Good News Is We Got a Refund

The Ober Gatlinburg experience was so bad for my wife and I that the very name of the place became an adjective for us that refers to something that has gone horribly wrong.

On the way up, the tram system blew a fuse and we were stuck hanging over the mountainside for about 15 minutes. They fill up the car like a sardine can, and there are only a couple of benches, so we were standing and cramped through all this.

When we got to the top, we realized that the place is little more than a glorified tourist trap. Basically, you spend money to get there (or park there) only to spend more money once you're in. Seriously, other than the fake snow skiing and snow tubing (which are seasonal), there is nothing there that you cannot do just about anywhere else. We were so depressed by the whole thing, that all we ended up doing was buying beer (which was decently priced).

And that wasn't the worst of it. After we finished our beers, we found out that the tram was closed. They were busing people with - pause for effect - two short buses and a passenger van! This was their backup plan! We waited an hour in that lousy line just to get out of the place! We thought about walking the two miles down!

Fortunately, they had the business sense enough to refund us the cost of our tram tickets. But all-in-all, the experience ended up taking three hours out of our day and amounted to a beer for each of us.

...And then there's the James Bond-esque Sky Tram... an aerial tram up the mountainside in a box that can hold up to 120 people as it runs on cables at 15 mph.... beautiful. And $8/ad, $6 kids for two days unlimited rides....

At the Top (and that was OBER GATLINBURG) there is a mini-amusement park for $18/ad, $14/kids for unlimited play. This is perfect for families with kids up to age...12..... older than that and they might be bored for lack of people to stare at and flirt with... but it's just large enough to have something for everyone, and still make parents secure in the fact that they're safe.

They've got an ALPINE slide (right ON) that was my personal favorite ride - even with a 5 year old hitchhiker with me - and they've got a couple of water slides, and one water raft ride - the Cyclone - and some mini-carnival rides for the wee ones, with a playground.

They've got a chairlift from there to the top of the mountain, where the views are spectacular, and of course you can purchase a beautiful picture of you on your chairlift with the Rockies in the background. $10.

They've also got the go-karts (yeah, that can get a little intense for the adults... :) and the "Pirate Ship" that swings from left to right until everyone wants to hurl. But my son, 11, was on that more than ten times.

The glory here? NO LINES. Even in June. Ahhh. I hate lines.

Ober Gatlinburg

The Ober Gatlinburg Aerial Tramway has been providing an outstanding view of the Smoky Mountains since 1973. Based at traffic light # 9 in Gatlinburg, you can ride one of the two aerial counter balanced cars from downtown Gatlinburg to the Ober Gatlinburg Ski Resort and Amusement Park, which is on Mt. Harrison.

The cable cars themselves are a different sight in the U.S. Built in Switzerland by Von Roll, the cable cars travel about 17mph, and travels 11,000 feet (2.1 miles) to the mountain station, which is at an elevation of 2675 feet. Each car will hold up to 120 people with one attendant and leaves about every 20 minutes. The total ride takes about 10 minutes in which you will meet the other cable car at the halfway point. Be sure to wave at the folks in the other car!!!

Upon entering the cable car, go to the front or back middle section for the best view of both sides while traveling up or down the mountain. The octagonal cable car has glass windows completely surrounding it; but if standing on the sides, you can only see the side you are facing (especially if you are short). The open windows at each end provide a slight breeze in the summer time as you travel up or down the mountain. The cable cars are wheel chair accessible as is Ober Gatlinburg.

When you arrive at Ober Gatlinburg, there are several activities to occupy your time. You can ice skate in the indoor arena, play miniature golf, ride the Pirate Ship (Memorial thru Labor Day only), take a scenic chairlift even further up to the top of Mt. Harrison, or cool off in the Blue Cyclone Rapids as you ride your inflated air raft down through 600 feet of water! Other than getting wet with my clothes on, the water would have felt extremely good on this HOT August day! Two downhill alpine slides on 1800-foot tracks allow you to experience bob sledding! A small fenced area allows kids to play while under their parent’s watchful eyes.

A few shops are also located at Ober Gatlinburg as well as a snack bar and restaurant.

A black bear habitat is visible on the left side as you arrive. It costs an additional $2 per person. We caught a glimpse of the bears on our arrival/departure trips and they were quite content sleeping on the shaded concrete that surrounded them on this hot afternoon.

Riding the tramway roundtrip is $9 (adults), $6 for children ages 7–11, and 6 and under are free. All attractions require coupons, which are $2.50 each. A booklet of 10 can be purchased for $22.50. However, if planning to participate in many of these events, purchase the daily activity wristbands for $18 (adults) and children $14.

For us the tramway ride, seeing the Great Smoky Mountains and the mountain chalets as you slowly ascend up the mountainside is the highlight of Ober Gatlinburg.

This enclosed cable car (less scenic but also less frightening than the chairlift which accesses Mount Harrison) is the best way to get up the mountain to the recreation complex at Ober Gatlinburg. The complex offers in-door ice skating, an alpine slide, winter skiing, live entertainment and assorted eateries. Sports equipment is available for rent. You can drive up to Ober Gatlinburg, but there is nowhere to park. We sometimes take the tram just for fun. Before ski season the complex is not crowded and offers a welcome reprieve from the traffic in Gatlinburg.
