Desert Botanical Gardens

The Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix is a beautiful 50-acre desert garden with paved walking trails. It’s very peaceful and educational. Some walkways are in the direct sun and some are in the shade and there are plenty of benches if you’d like to relax. It was very hot when we visited, but we were prepared with hats, sunscreen, and water.
There are 5 different trails to visit: Desert Discovery Trail, Sonoran Desert Nature Trail, Center for Desert Living Trail and Desert Wildflower Trail. If you want to learn about the desert plants and wildlife in the area, this is the place to go. We saw families of quails, roadrunners, squirrels, butterflies, hummingbirds, lizards, and a jackrabbit.
There’s a terrific gift shop open 9am to 5pm I purchased a lovely cactus garden in a decorated clay pot for a reasonable price and they packed it to travel and it’s doing very well. They also have soda and vending machines and an outdoor café that’s open 8am to 4pm that serves salads and sandwiches.
The Garden is open every day from 7am to 8pm during May to September and 8am to 8pm October to April. They’re closed July 4, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Admission is $10.00 for adults and $4.00 for children 3 to 12.
This is a beautiful relaxing place to spend some time and learn about the desert.

Nothing can prepare you for the beauty of this place. Mountains alongside the gardens, wild birds, hundreds of rare and curious specimens of cactus and other plants. I could have spent an entire day there...couldn't take that much time. Easy to get to from the side-by-side cities of Phoenix and Scottsdale. From the intersection of 64th St. and McDowell Road, you drive south until 64th St. becomes Galvin Parkway, then 1/4 mile on the left.

Of interest to people of all ages and very easy walking. As the sun was setting, I saw a family of road runners zipping around the garden. Great fun!

This is a garden of various cactus and desert plants, and is one of the biggest collectios you will ever see. The paths each go into different replicas of climates of Arizona to show the plants of each native area. It was extremely hot and is unshaded. It was disappointing the gift shop closes early. If you are into cactus, this is the place to visit.

My husband exploded when we visited the Botanical Gardens. I thought it would be interesting. He wanted to sit by the pool on our last full day of vacation. I wish I could tell you that it was good, but there are different species of cactus. It was a bare desert. It didn't help that my husband was real cranky. At least if the gardens were beautiful I might have been able to convince him how great this was, but I actually agreed with him. We spent about one hour there and immediately went to the pool!

The Phoenix Desert Botanical Garden is a beautifully managed and maintained outdoor garden with walking trails. Entry fees are $7.50 for adults and $3.50 for children. You'll walk through desert landscape on wide walkways that meander around the base of a small mountain. You'll learn all about the amazing desert plants and their habitat. There's a Butterfly House and a Big Bug exhibit. It's very peaceful and educational. In spring and fall there are outdoor concerts on Sunday afternoons at reasonable prices. Food can be purchased at the concerts. There is a lovely gift shop and plant shop.
