This "farm" is a zoological park with many things to offer beyond alligators. There is a wonderful rookery with native birds. This is the largest natural bird rookery in Florida. Surprisingly, the alligators provide protection to the nests from the likes of raccoons, snakes, and opossums. Although some hatchlings are lost to the alligators, it appears that the protection from other predators is worth that risk. One of the alligator exhibits is of "albino" alligators from the bayous of Louisiana. The legend goes that viewing these animals can bring you good luck. We got a good picture. Maybe that will serve the purpose.
The cost is below $20 for adults and $10 and under for children. Educational tours are much lower. The basic hours are 9am to 5pm. There is an annual photography contest that I have not won yet but you never know. As you stroll along the walkways you will find many alligators and crocodile, numerous species of snakes and tropical birds galore. Monkeys and turtles are among the family as well. There are shows and educational presentations routinely through the day. There is handicap accessibility. The best part of this animal park is the price. You get your moneys worth. Additionally it is easy to maneuver and there are shady resting spots along the way.
Founded in 1893, the history is a significant fact as the farm is on the National Register of Historic Places. The exhibits are unique from many of the animal parks or marine parks. One of the inconvenient things is that it is not a large park and if you find yourself there with a school tour you might be waiting to see some of the exhibits. The risk is worth it though.
