One of my Favorite Attraction in St. Augustine

During our vacation to St. Augustine we visited this Alligator "Farm," which turned out to be my favorite attaction. We visited in August, so it was hot and humid, with the entire attraction being outside. For $20 we saw alligators and crocodiles from all over the world and watched as they were fed. We saw an exotic animal who with birds and reptiles, including a snake that was bigger than it's handler. There were also birds and monkeys in inclosed exhibits. Possibly my favorite part of the visit was the rookery. This is a replicated Florida Swamp, where wild birds come to roost and captive alligators swim under the boardwalk at your feet. This is an attraction not to miss if you're in St. Augustine.

The St. Augustine Alligator Farm

This "farm" is a zoological park with many things to offer beyond alligators. There is a wonderful rookery with native birds. This is the largest natural bird rookery in Florida. Surprisingly, the alligators provide protection to the nests from the likes of raccoons, snakes, and opossums. Although some hatchlings are lost to the alligators, it appears that the protection from other predators is worth that risk. One of the alligator exhibits is of "albino" alligators from the bayous of Louisiana. The legend goes that viewing these animals can bring you good luck. We got a good picture. Maybe that will serve the purpose.

The cost is below $20 for adults and $10 and under for children. Educational tours are much lower. The basic hours are 9am to 5pm. There is an annual photography contest that I have not won yet but you never know. As you stroll along the walkways you will find many alligators and crocodile, numerous species of snakes and tropical birds galore. Monkeys and turtles are among the family as well. There are shows and educational presentations routinely through the day. There is handicap accessibility. The best part of this animal park is the price. You get your moneys worth. Additionally it is easy to maneuver and there are shady resting spots along the way.

Founded in 1893, the history is a significant fact as the farm is on the National Register of Historic Places. The exhibits are unique from many of the animal parks or marine parks. One of the inconvenient things is that it is not a large park and if you find yourself there with a school tour you might be waiting to see some of the exhibits. The risk is worth it though.

Alligator Farm

The alligator farm is a St. Augustine must-do. The park is very relaxing and done within 2 to 4 hours, depending on how much you want to read. There are many different types of alligators, crocs, and birds. Many of them are endangered species. Kids may at times find things a little boring. Being honest, alligators and such do not do much other than at feeding time. Some can be hard to spot because they are lying so still. If you do not read much, you will go through the park rather quickly, in about 2 hours.

There are several great shows that allow anyone to touch the animals afterwards. Feeding time is a must. From March to June, the local bird population builds nests over a small lake in the park. This provides the birds protection from predators, but on the odd occasion, a little bird might find itself being a snack if it falls out of the nest. The nests are real close to the walkway. This allows anyone to see eggs and baby birds. There are pellet feeding places around this area, and the kids get a kick out of feeding the alligators, too. The park is covered by large oak trees and relatively cool, even in the hot months. Look for 10% coupons in several of the city flyers or a 20% coupon on the website. ENJOY!
