Devil's Garden Primitive Loop

Although some guides call this a multi-mile hike, that is just for the full trail. Sand Dune, which was God's gift to children isn't really a hike. It's probably no longer than the far end of a mall parking lot from the street. Sand Dune Arch is tucked away between some tall fins which block out the sun for most all the day. Therefore, it is very cool and relaxing. It almost feels as though you are inside. SD Arch is a can't miss if you have small kids, or even older ones. It's a giant sand box topped off with a scalable arch (although a little risky, but then so is everything here).

Devil's Garden Primitive Loop

Devil's Garden Primitive Loop

Length: 7.2 mi/11.5 km round-trip, including all points of interest
Time: 3 to 5 hours

This is the longest of the maintained trails in the park, but is completely unsupervised by park personnel (at least that we noticed). The Devils Garden Trail leads to eight awe-inspiring arches including Landscape Arch and Double O. There are also spectacular views of the rock "fins." Expect narrow ledges with rocky surface hiking and scrambling on slickrock. You'll also need to keep an eye out for rock cairns, small piles of rock which mark the trail route. For the most part, these are easily identified. Not recommended when rock is wet or snowy. Wear protective footwear with excellent traction, I did see women in heels at the trailhead and hope they were only walking the short distance to see Landscape Arch.
