The Canyons

Variety, quality, fluffy snow

For Experts:
Bowls that surpass Vail in pitch and vertical, steeps and chutes to rival Taos, glades, drops, bumps, thrills, and vistas... aka Jackson Hole. Backcountry on par with Canadian Bugaboos. Trails lined with aspens and pines--wear a helmet. Exclusive expert-only (no-wait) lifts that weed out all others.

For Intermediates:
Challenging groomers, tempered glades, and gentle bumpers.

For Beginners:
A dedicated mountain and excellent staff.

For Boarders: "It's all good"--man-made and natural pipes and parks!

The Skinny
My 8- and 11-year-old children (both black-level shredders) liked their instructors so much that they requested to stay in the groups! My wife and I enjoyed sit-down lunches of fine cuisine at 9,000 feet, in between serene backcountry bowls of freshies and granite-framed ill shoots.

Luckily, if you're in SLC, there's a bunch of areas to choose from. We headed up towards Park City on the highways (luckily, they were all open) and went to the Canyons, which is the first resort you pass when you enter the road to Park City. It had snowed just as much there as the Cottonwood Resorts, and we were able to get there with no problem. It took about 45 minutes from the Midvale area. We really lucked out -- there was at least 2-3" of fresh, and tons of new terrain to explore. I think the Canyons have around seven peaks, and the most acreage of any other Utah resort. It's so big we hardly saw any other skiiers. So if you are skiing the Alta/Snowbird/Solitude/Brighton areas, try the Canyons for a change of pace. I think next time I will try to get to Powder Mountainn.

They have a heated year-round outdoor pool and hot tub with a spa. Everything is within walking distance. They also have hot-air balloon rides nearby. There's a free bus shuttle if you want to go into town.
