Description: The Lake Tahoe Visitor Center is a great destination for an afternoon of learning about the flora and fauna of Lake Tahoe. There are several easy nature trails but the best is the Rainbow Trail -- pick up a self-guided tour map and follow the trail to the Stream Profile Chamber where you go underground to view trout, salmon, and other critters. My 11-year-old son was fascinated with this exhibit and used up quite a bit of videotape there. This is probably the best free attraction in South Lake Tahoe. We also walked one of the trails to the beach and listened to a park ranger talk about insects. There is also a small amphitheater where nightime presentations are frequently held. The Tallac Historic Site is adjacent to the Nature Center and we wandered over there but the museum and buildings were closed by that time late in the afternoon so we returned on another day, but the visitor center and Tallac site could easily be combined for a relaxing day in a quieter section of South Lake Tahoe.
