The lift across the street was a cable-car tram that held about thirty people. It takes you about half way up the mountain to an area with restaurants where you can catch other lifts going in different directions.
Overall, it was a very nice mountain. They had great trails that were always freshly groomed, and it wasn’t crowded at all. (Maybe that was because we came toward the very end of the season, I don’t know.) The trails aren’t quite as nice as those at Keystone Mountain in Colorado (which we have been to many times), but are right below it. We tried riding the gondola to the other side of the mountain, but found that to be not as nice. Also, the gondola took much longer to progress up the mountain.
Perhaps the coolest thing about Heavenly is that you can actually ski across the state line. You’ll just be going along a trail and see a sign that says "Now entering California." The view is also spectacular! From the top of the mountain, you can see all of Lake Tahoe. It’s one of the most beautiful views you may ever see. All in all, a great ski resort.

The lifts were never too busy; I hardly waited in a line and the runs weren't too crowded for early in the season.

The comfortable gondolas start out at the new Marriott resort (under construction) and proceed up the mountain offering you incredible views of Lake Tahoe. Half way up (9123 feet elevation), you can get out at Malcolm's deck which provides you with "views of the Carson Valley to the east, and Desolation Wilderness to the west…not to mention, jaw-dropping shore-to-shore views of Lake Tahoe," to quote the Heavenly web-site.
Continue on up to the summit for excellent hiking and more views of the territory from the backside of the mountain. Advice: bring plenty of water if you plan to do any hiking at the summit. In the summer, it's dry, dusty, and hot! There is only a very small souvenir desk at the observation deck and a refreshment cart at the summit and their beverage selection is very limited.
This is one attraction that should not be missed!!
Note: I just read on the Heavenly web-site that the Gondola is going to be closed for maintenance from May 13 through May 24. Bummer.
