Steel Pier

The steel Pier! What used to be a true destination—I remember (in the 1960s) going to the Steel Pier and seeing the Beach Boys in concert, and I remember the diving horse who ‘jumped’ from the diving platform into a tank of water, watching the elevator taking the horse to the top was just about as cool as seeing it go down—now it is a very overpriced amusement park with a carnival feel.

The rides are all based on a ticket system and the tickets are $.75 each. The major rides (go-carts, wild mouse, disk-O, etc) take 9 tickets which is $6.75 a ride (and short rides they are). So, if a family of four goes that is a quickly spent $27 for about 2 minutes of fun. The other rides (i.e. tilt-a whirl, merry-go-round, etc) are 4 or 5 tickets, still $3 to $3.75 a ride and $12 to $15 for that family of four. On Wednesday and Thursday you can buy a wrist band for unlimited admission to all of the rides, however, they say it is unlimited but it isn’t. With the band you can only do the climbing wall once and the go-carts three times. The band costs $35 each and is good from 3pm until 10pm. If you are looking to get the bracelet, check out the height requirements for each ride. If your child is under 48 inches in height there are only a few rides they will be able to ride. Not included with the bracelet use is the big attraction is the Rocket, which is a two person spherical seating system which is then shot up 225 feet and bounces up and down a few times. It is $20 a person. Although they have ½ price rides on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons, they offer a video of you and your co-rider screaming as you are shot into the air for an additional $10. The kids loved the ride and it was worth it when it was $10 at $20. I’m not so sure since we were going to be in Atlantic City for a week the first night we walked the steel Pier and saw what rides were available and confirmed the times the bracelets and ½ price rocket was available and told the kids we would do it at that time. It gave the kids something to look forward to.

It has the old-time amusement-park feeling for sure. You walk in and instantly are bombarded by the sights and sounds of a carnival. Beware of the carnival gamers when you walk in, though! They will try to lure you into spending $5 to $10 to play their game by telling you it's guaranteed to win because it's so easy. Just tell them right off the bat that you are not interested and they should leave you alone the next time you walk by. Bring a lot of money with you if you plan to ride rides, because each ticket costs $.75 and the good rides take 7 to 8 tickets per person! They do offer ride passes for $25 and $50. This is probably a better deal if you have a lot of people riding.

Steel Pier

The Steel Pier in an amusement park built on a boardwalk over the ocean. I find that exciting. The thought of riding on a roller coaster or doing the sling shot is even more fun when you are out over the ocean. It a place for the whole family to have fun. The park offers free performances of breathtaking stunts. John and Alexandra Nock ride a motorcycle on a high wire 60 feet above the steel pier in the summer (three times daily.) Go to the information station on the broadwalk for coupons. You can get a "$5 off" ticket booklet for rides.

I like the Steel Pier. Even though I'm old enough to gamble, the pier still has enough appeal to pull me out of the casino and out into the sunshine. At the entrance, food stands sell everything from funnel cake to popcorn to cotton candy to ice cream. Enjoy. You've earned it.

The entrance is lined with games of chance...water race games, knock over the milk bottles with a baseball, get a softball in the basket, nearly every one you've ever seen. The prizes are pretty good, but beware of game vendors who will try to convince you to keep playing, will promise you prizes no matter what as long as you try and try again. If you don't win, you will probably end up with a stuffed animal the size of a keychain, and will have to win 20 more so that you can trade up for a medium sized prize.

The rides. There's the Crazy Mouse roller coaster, bumper cars, bumper boats, a kiddie go cart track, and lots of others. For adults, a ride called the rocket may have you wishing that you'd stayed on the blackjack table. ($20 a shot). You can also get yourself a helicopter ride over the Atlantic, see Atlantic City from the ocean, the air, the way the seagulls do. ($25 per person).

With 24 rides, games and prize wheels, a food court and free admission, this is one of the best stops in Atlantic Ciy. Steel Pier originally opened in 1898 and quickly became known for show casing the world's top entertainers including W.C. Fields.
