Peaceful Garden Walk

Peaceful Garden Walk

Our admission to White River Gardens was included with our tickets to the Indianapolis Zoo. We simply showed our receipt and were admitted in to the garden.

When you first walk into the building there is a round room with a mural on the wall. There was also artwork on display. When we were there it was all pictures of sunflowers. Very expensive pictures of sunflowers.

After showing our reciept, we went into the butterfly garden.

I have never been to a butterfly garden, so I wasn't sure what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised. If was a room with tons of plants, and butterflies just flying around. There wasn't a lot of noise, and people spoke very softly. There were a lot of photographers there, which made me feel a little silly with my digital camera, as people around me were squatting and doing a lot of zooming with their uber expensive fancy cameras.

There also is a case when they put all of the cocoons in which was neat to see the different shapes and sizes of the different cocoons. There were also 3 butterflies that had just "hatched" so we got to see them airing out their wings, and tring to fly for the first time.

After the butterfly garden, we went outside to the normal gardens. (It was a long hot day, and we did this just before going home. I jokingly refered to the outside garden as the 'bee garden'.)

The garden area is divided up into sections, and there there are different garden displays. Each of the "design gardens" had a theme. There were signs by each of these gardens when the gardener explained their design model. There was also another sign that had a diagram to explain the concept of that mini garden.

Behind the gardens, there were water gardens, which were very nice and peaceful. There was the largest lily pads that I have ever seen in the water gardens.

In the very back of the area, there is a wedding area that is absolutely beautiful. As I said this to my husband, however, a fire truck went driving by, and the sirens were really loud. My husband joked that the sirens would be a great finishing touch during the vows.

I really enjoyed the White River Gardens, but would probably have been happier if it had been in the 80s not the 90s. I also will say that I am not a gardener. I think that a person who is very into gardening would love to see the White River Gardens. I enjoyed the peacefulness of the gardens, and thought it was pretty, but it's not something I would go see frequently. I would very highly recommend it to people interested in gardening, but probably not to a family with children who are tired after a day at the zoo -- it's just not exciting for a tired person worn out from a long, exciting day.

White River Gardens is the sister institution to the Indianapolis Zoo and includes a glass-enclosed conservatory; outdoor design gardens; water garden; a wedding garden for ceremonies and receptions; a resource center; a gift shop; one and a half miles of winding paths and walkways; and an indoor/outdoor dining facility with a dramatic view of the downtown skyline and the riverfront.

The White River Gardens are located right next to the Indianapolis Zoo and share the same parking lot ($4 to park your car). For only $12.50, I bought a combo pass to the zoo and the gardens.

The gardens were lovely and had an endless assortment of plants and flowers. I'm sure it would be an absolute dream to any avid gardener. The gift shop also seemed to cater to gardeners with all sorts of gardening implements and floral items for sale.

We entered the garden through the butterfly conservatory which is a two-story glass building filled with plants and butterflies flying around. It was amazing to see so many butterflies and some people were lucky enough to have them land on them (a great photo opp!) To try and avoid butterflies escaping you enter through double doors. They close one set before opening the next. There was also someone standing at the exit checking people over for stow-away butterflies on clothing. The sign on the conservatory said there were supposed to be 10,000 butterflies in the conservatory. It certainly didn't seem to be 10,000, although I was told by a local that a bird had gotten into the conservatory a few months before and had gobbled up a lot of butterflies.

The gardens themselves were lovely and we saw chairs set up for a wedding to be held there later that day. Certainly a gorgeous spot for a wedding.

While the gardens were pretty, they would appeal more to adults than kids. The butterly conservatory, on the other hand, would appeal to all ages.
