The museum has numerous exhibits and collections. There are many paintings and sculptures to view in this large, multi-floored building. The art varies between contemporary, American, European, Asian, African, and South Pacific, along with drawings, prints, and photographs. The museum is currently undergoing renovation and expansion, which is due to be completed by 2005.
Besides the museum itself, you can visit the Lilly House. This mansion sits on 26 acres and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Inside, the house is decorated in 1930s style and contains many of Lilly's collections of coins and books. The Lilly name is well known in Indianapolis because of Eli Lilly Pharmaceuticals. The family member who owned the property was the grandson of the famous Eli Lilly. Lilly did not build the mansion, but purchased it in 1919, renovated it, and moved in with his family in 1921. To tour the mansion, the museum charges a small fee of $5 for adults and $4 for children.
For those with a love of art, block out a day to tour not only the museum but also the Lilly House and beautiful grounds and gardens surrounding the entire area.
