For Love of the Game

For Love of the Game

We have been to Victory Field a few times since moving to the area in 2006. It is a very nice, clean field that has reasonably priced tickets.

My husband and I used to go to a Pro Stadium before moving here, and I strongly prefer the smaller, more intimate feel of the minor league experience. It's great to be able to see the faces of the players as they play, and to watch them enjoy fans wanting their autographs every game.

Tickets are very reasonable ($9-13 a seat) but the food always seems high to me. I do not plan my games around specials, though. And really, how often do you get to eat ballpark food?

Going to a game at Victory Field is something that I would reccomend to anyone.

Indianapolis Indians Home Game

Victory Field in Indy is a beautiful ballpark. It's located in the heart of downtown, within walking distance to many hotels, restaurants and other attractions. The park is so family-friendly. The tickets are affordable, from around $6 to about $15 (sorry, I can't remember all the price levels, but it was cheap). The views from all of the seats are good. You can buy general admission tickets to sit on the outfield lawn and have a picnic. I think they'll even let you bring your own cooler into that area, which is awesome. The team is good too, they've been the AAA World Series champions. I have to admit that I don't take the game very seriously, but I do really enjoy being at the park with my family.

Batter Up! The Indianapolis Indians

Batter Up! The Indianapolis Indians

The Indianapolis Indians are our AAA Minor League team, but going to a game is some of the most fun you can have! Tickets are dirt-cheap--expect to pay $7 for a bleacher seat, $12 for a reserved box seat (kids $1 cheaper). However, there are always ticket deals going on, sponsorship deals, and often people handing out extra tickets in front of Victory Field before games. Check out IndyIndians.com for ticket prices.

The Indians call Victory Field home, and it is one heck of a ballpark. Sports Illustrated called it the best minor league park in the U.S., evident in the brick walls, retro stylings, and old-time feel. The ballpark is part of White River State Park, on the corner of West and Maryland. Get to the game early to try to score a street parking spot, or park in the nearby WRSP garage.

By getting to the game early, you can enjoy the pre-game activities. For kids, there is face-painting, pitching games, and arcade games. Almost every night is a promotion night, so the first fans will often receive free popcorn, drinks, bobblehead dolls, a schedule magnet, or a T-shirt. Throwback Thursdays have cheap beer and retro uniforms worn by the team. Friday night games feature post-game fireworks. And check the website for ticket discounts and further promotions. Every game is fun!

Looking for a cheap family evening or a fun date? Grab lawn seats for $7 and bring a picnic dinner, cooler, and a blanket to stretch out on the lawn, just past the outfield. You'll have a great view of the game (especially the home runs), plus you can save on concession food while you enjoy the sunset over the city skyline.
