Old Oakland Farmer's Market is open Fridays 7am to 2pm, and stretches a few blocks along 9th St., beginning at Broadway and ending at Clay St. It's where local growers bring fresh produce to the customers. There are also merchants selling popcorn, baked goods, trinkets, living plants, and roasted chicken.
I personally like to go all the way to the end to check out the oranges there. Usually it's a little less expensive, though Chinatown nearby can often beat their prices. But the quality can be better - since it's direct from the grower, it's fresher. It's also good to just people-watch.
