Hiking, Canoeing, Fishing, and Barbeque

The surroundings are nothing like the rest of Yosemite Park. Rock-climbing, hiking, picnicking, and even kayaking are the activities that you want to explore here. You're not in the valley anymore! This is the high country and has a completely other feeling than the crowded valley below.
If you are only passing through (to Monolake or Death Valley), be sure to take your time and stop the car often for a short hike or just to breath in the clean air and enjoy the view.

On the shores of the mountain lakes, the park service has built several barbeque fireplaces. Just be sure to clean your garbage up after you are finished!

Tioga Pass

Just south of the entrance at Tioga Pass on the East side of the park there are a number of hikes to fill your day. The Gaylor Lakes and Hanging Gardens hikes are slightly physical but well worth it. Once you get over the ridge and down the other side to Gaylor lakes, it is an open ended valley with spectacular views. You can spend the afternoon lazing around and exploring the many lakes in this small valley.
