Kona is such a big island you would think there are plenty of beaches. However, many of the beaches are lava rock and not easy to access. Hapuna beach is one of the nice white sand beaches along the Kona Coast.
Great for boogie boarding and body surfing. Waves get a little large for smaller children in the afternoon. Showers are available as well as a public restroom and picnic area. Not good for snorkeling and the parking is not that great. But...the beach is worth it!

Hapuna Beach

Hapuna is a popular white sand beach located off the Queen Kaahumanu Highway about 1 mile south of the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel and about 1 mile north of the small town of Puako. There is usually a lot of parking and the beach is only about a 5 minute walk downhill from the parking lot. This beach can get very hot especially during the summer when the sun beats down on the sand. There is a grassy area with picnic structures but it is located far from the ocean. There is a big stretch of sand that you have to traverse before reaching the cool waters of the ocean so you should wear slippers to walk to the beach. Most of the year the waters are clear and come with a few 1-2 foot waves. However, during the winter months (storm season) the waves can get very high and the currents can become potentially dangerous.

Usually, you will know that it is too dangerous to swim in the water because there will be signs posted and you will notice that the water tide line will come really high up the beach. As far as snorkeling, there is not much to see since there is no reef close to shore. Also there is too much people in the water so they will scare away any fish that might be cruising around. Luckily, there are a lot of turtles along the South Kohala Coast, so if you are lucky you might be able to see several turtles swimming by. Most people swim by the beach near the parking lot but you can also walk and swim in the beach area that fronts the Hapuna Prince Hotel. You should bring your own snacks and beverages because there is only one concession at the beach (which is very expensive) and there are no fast food restaurants in the area (the nearest general store would be in Puako). You can forget about kayaking, windsurfing, jet skiing or camping because these activities are not aloud close to shore at this beach. Both locals and visitors frequent this beautiful white sand beach.

Hapuna Beach has been voted best beach in the world. It certainly is beautiful, a crescent-shaped, sandy beach with palm trees and beautiful, clear water. It even has small waves in the summer, something hard to find!

There is an excellent place to eat here -- Senor Frog's. They have amazing fish tacos and good smoothies, and it's worth a trip to Hapuna just to have lunch here.

The drawback of Hapuna Beach? It's crowded, even on weekdays. If you have a beautiful, quiet beach at your hotel, you will probably prefer it to the wall-to-wall beach towels on Hapuna. (We did.) If you like crowded beaches, this is one of the best on the island.

This beach is a large golden sand beach that is excellent for swimming, good for boogie boarding, and decent for snorkeling. Just about anyone will enjoy this beach (although it can be windy at times), and we spent a few days here. The snorkeling is way over to the right and boogie boarding is best on the left hand side. We saw a couple of turtles snorkeling as well as about twenty different types of fish. The food at the snack bar is expensive but tasted good.

The most beautiful beach on the island. We went every day because it was not too far from Paniola Greens. We also went back for the breathtaking sunset.
