Sundance Square

The heart of downtown Fort Worth and the place to be on a weekend is Sundance Square. Sundance Square is an area that is filled with endless entertainment. There are tons of restaurants, comedy clubs, coffee shops, two movie theaters, several bars, and endless entertainment. Friday and Saturday nights are hopping in Sundance Square. Live bands perform at local bars and people stroll up and down the street enjoying the sights and sounds of downtown.

During the day, Sundance Square is also a sight to see, from almost anywhere you walk you can see the buildings and a beautiful sight of the down town area. Sundance Square is home to the Ball Hall, which hosts concerts, ballets, and other very nice classy events. The Bass Hall is located where you cannot miss it. Two huge angels tooting horns hold up the wall and are a sign to all that you are looking at the Ball Hall.

One of the things we did on our trip to Downtown/Sundance Square was going to Barns and Nobles. If you do not know what a Barnes and Nobel’s is, well it is a huge bookstore, 2 story to be exact. There is a Starbucks located at one entrance, where you can grab a drink and then head to your favorite section and spend hours there. With 7 girls we were scattered out and then all ended up in the same place, the magazine section reading gossip magazines. This bookstore is so big you are sure to find anything you need. I found two great books for my 2-year-old son. When I brought them home he loved them. Barnes and Nobles encourages you to spend as much time as you would like and take some time to read through or look at the books before you buy them.

I mentioned in my introduction that there are 2 movie theaters in Sundance Square, they are located right across each other and show movies at many different times. Next to one of them is the Bass Hall and next to the other one is a TCBY. Also located in Sundance Square is the Tandy Center, which has an ice skating rink and several stores and businesses. Sundance Square is a great place to spend the day or the evening and be entertained by food, music, or a movie.

This covers a few city blocks. Thoough this looks like downtown with office buildings, this particular area surrounding the square has restored buildings housing shops, galleries, bars and restaurants. We got there early, so most places were not yet opened. However, it became more happening after lunch, around 2pm or so. It's a nice walk with interesting courtyards and little gardens in some building terraces. There are also a few cute stores. This is worth a stop to stroll and have brunch!

Sundance Square

Busy, busy even on a Monday night. Sundance Quare is in the heart of downtown Fort Worth. Often coming as a surprise to convention visitors, Sundance Quare is usually full of people until late at night. Barnes & Noble Book Store is a fine place for shopping and people watching especially from the second floor area over looking the Bass Performance Hall across the street. The coffee bar in B & N is (whatelse?) a Starbucks. Perhaps it's all that coffee that keeps everyone up so late at night. Yes, Sundance Square is named after the Sundance Kid who really did prowl around Fort Worth (not that big city to the east). Safe, safe, safe to walk around. Plenty of parking, mostly free after 6pm. Endless varieties of restaurants, bars, clubs, many, many movie screens. Not to mention the Bass Performance Hall home of the symphony, ballet and the big shots who come to town to perform. Great people watching! Ten minutes by car from the Cultural District (museums) and ten minutes from the stock yards area. Plenty to do. No chance for boredom here. Also, evening shopping in specialty stores. Ice skating (yes) in a large off-price store mall. Wear comfortable shoes, there's plenty to see afoot. The police officers ride horses and bicycles. A lot of people wear hats. Y'all come! New construction at the Covention Center to the south means that the downtown entertainment area is expanding in that direction. Soon the old overhead freeway (I-30) will be coming down to end the decades long division of downtown Fort Worth into 2 parts. Look for more entertainment areas, hotels, restaurants, shops and bars to come. The downtown buildings are all lite up at night with orange lights to give the appearance of a perpetual holiday--which it certainly feels like. Christmas holiday lights are a great addition. Don't miss this! (817) 390-8711
