Overland Park, Kansas
May 5, 2002
In 2002 they opened an all-new African Exhibit, the Okavango Delta. This is a great addition to this zoo. In this exhibit, in addition to relocating animals they already had, they have added 2 Masai Giraffes (although while we were there, one of them died for unknown reasons - but they are hopeful of getting another one); 3 Red River Hogs and 3 African Lions. This exhibit is great for the animals as well nicely designed for the visitor to observe the animals.
They are also building a large entrance building so that entrance at the moment is through a small gate to the side of new building.
The front exhibits near the entrance gates are virtually empty as most of these animals were relocated into the new African Exhibit. Information we could get indicated that they plan to revamp this area in the future for other new exhibits.
It is a small zoo and can be visited and enjoyed in 2 to 3 hours.
At the moment it is quite a work in progress but their plans for the zoo appear to be very forward looking and the zoo should become a better place to visit as time passes.
If you are a member of the Friends of the Zoo at your local zoo, there is a good chance that this zoo is reciprical with them, which means you can visit it for free.
