Red Rock Loop

We only had time to do part of the hike. Although it’s classified as "beginner," you will need the proper foot attire and water. The red rocks break and slide, so take care when crossing them. The trail starts off with flatish grasslands of juniper and changes into oak woodland closer to the creek. This is as far as we had time to go (1.5 hours). We saw mountain bikers on the path, but parts were so treacherous, they had to port their bikes. Follow the rock cairns sheathed in chicken wire to stay on the path.

This is a really nice park. There are great views of Oak Creek and Cathedral Rock. There are lots of sidewalks if you have a stroller or a wagon, and open grassy areas for kids to run. It's a good place for kids who just want to enjoy nature. The park has BBQs, picnic tables, etc. There's a nice dirt path hiking along the creek, too! Very flat and easy.

We Flew the Red Rocks

We were met at our timeshare at 4am--no typo here--to meet our ride for a 5am departure. We flew the red rocks of Sedona in a hot air ballon. What a sight to behold--the sunrise reflecting of off the red formations, we soon forgot that we had to get up so early. We watched the sunrise during our ascent.

After a gentle liftoff, we glided over the glamorous red rock country. Sedona's natural wonders and wildlife sightings delighted us as we floated calmly with the air currents of the day. There is no other way to see all of Sedona's spectacular red rock beauty.

You are away from it all. You do see some houses nearby, but you do not hear cars, planes, or voices while on the trail. You really feel that you are the only one there! Each side of the park gives you a different view and feel. The plants are even different.

Chimney Rock Loop

Think of this as the fun, easy part of your Thunder Mountain Trail + Chimney Rock Loop excursion. It is mostly downhill (which you will appreciate after TMT) and has lots of turns and dips that make it interesting. There are even some nice jumps on a couple of the turnoffs from the main trail. It takes about 20 minutes and you are coasting most of the time. Just let loose, watch out for rocks and enjoy the cool breeze.
