Visiting Jerome, AZ

The state park museum has very interesting historic displays and, of course, a little gift shop. It doesn't take a very long time to go through it and you can learn many interesting facts about the town. There are videos and panoramic photographs, artifacts of all kinds and sizes. I really enjoyed it. It was very relaxing after all the hiking we did during our first few days in the Sedona area.

After we visited the state park we went into town to look in the shops and have lunch. There are only a few streets and they climb back and forth across the side of the hill. Not too hard to walk if you pace yourself. We had lunch at The Haunted Hamburger. It is a restaurant and bar that has very reasonable prices, good service and good food.

Some shops have a lot of the same things you see in all the tourist stores all over the place. There are also a lot of shops with unique items, locally made arts and crafts which are moderate to high priced. In my humble opinion it is worthwhile to visit Jerome.

Jerome - A Mining Town

Jerome is an old mining town and also used to be a ghost town. They now have many small art galleries as well as a state park. They also have a small canyon which no one mentioned, but the view was beautiful.

Jerome is located just outside of Sedona and takes about 25 minutes to reach. For your information, Wal-Mart is on your way on the left hand side. This was a small, but nice surprise.

Jerome is in the mountains, so be prepared for small, winding roads. It is about 25 miles southwest of Sedona. Visit the Historic Park, where you can tour the mansion that once belonged to the copper mine owner. The town has an interesting past. See the movie in the mansion that describes the history.

There are small shops and points of interest in the downtown area. Stop at the information booth to get a map of the town for a quarter. We ate in the Haunted Hamburger, which has a great view. Save room for dessert--the piece of cake they gave us was big enough for four people to enjoy.

This is the site of what once was a huge mining town with a population of around 15,000 just before the Great Depression. Down in the low hundreds today, it is rich with art, shops, good lunch spots, and interesting museums. Lots of interesting stuff to see and learn.
