Devil's Bridge

It starts off on a slight uphill grade. Many parts of the beginning of the path are very easy. There a sign in/out book. I suppose so they can make sure everyone who went up also came back in one piece. It's also fun to look and see where the other visitors are from.

It gets progressively steeper. There are rock steps some placed, some natural, and some may be carved out. I wouldn't say the last bit of the trail is straight up but it is a climb. There is an outcropping before you get to the top where you can rest and see a wonderful vista. When we got all the way up there were a few kids up there (with their parents, of course) ranging in age from about 8 to 14. You can walk onto the "devil's bridge" for a picture but it is a little scary just because you are so high up and there are no hand rails. I would recommend proper footwear.

For such a short hike the rewards are, dare I say it, awesome. If I had only one day in Sedona I would make this my morning hike. It's straightforward going until you hit the rock stairs maybe a mile or so into the hike. Nothing too worrisome, maybe a bit of a scramble but you'll find a lot more difficult spots elsewhere on Sedona trails. Catching that first view of the arch is breathtaking. It's the kind of sight that expands out beyond the ability of words to express. Bask and revel in it, it's not often in our lives that we are rewarded so richly for so little effort. If you aren't vertigo prone you can venture out onto and across the arch. I don't mean to take anything away from the beauty you'll pass through on your way up, but the arch... captures you.

Devil's Bridge

The bumpy gravel road may seem quite long before you arrive at the trailhead, but you should have no problems if you drive carefully (expect speeds between 15-30mph). The trail is mostly easy with intermediate sections with narrow trail or a little higher rise. The trail offers very nice views of the valley and peaks around. The bridge itself is worth seeing too. You can see it both from underneath and from a rock just next to it. Walking on it is not permitted. If you have more time, there are more trails on this gravel road.

I recommend getting a nice Sedona map in a bookstore or elsewhere. It's called Experience Sedona - Recreation and Activity Map, and it has all the rocks named, trails marked, etc. And it's all in one map rather than buying individual topographic maps.

Devil's Bridge

First stop was Devil’s Bridge, which we eventually found and hiked. All of us got some really cool pictures as we walked out on the bridge and looked down to our sure death. The hike here took between one and two hours, since we had to park the car far away and walk almost a half mile before starting to hike upwards. Half of the people in our group refused to walk out over the bridge. It appears to be very narrow at the center, but in reality, it's about six feet wide...just don't trip!
