Main St./Hermann Park Entrance Area

Main St./Hermann Park Entrance Area

The entrance area of Hermann Park, along with the jogging/walking trail between Main and Fannin Streets, is one of Houston's most scenic locations. Several rows of mature live oak trees line the streets and trails, nearly covering all of Main St. When METRO was planning the light rail line through the park area, the line was routed down Fannin instead of Main to preserve these historic trees. While the east side of Main borders Hermann Park, the west side is flanked by beautiful historic homes and Rice University. The scenic neighborhoods west of this location are worth a drive or stroll to see the grand historic houses and tree-lined streets. The trails through Hermann Park and bordering the Rice University campus provide a very scenic location to walk or jog.

The largest attractions in this area are the Mecom Fountain, located in the middle of the Main/Montrose traffic circle, and the Sam Houston Statue, located in another traffic circle as Montrose enters the park. Also nearby are the Mecom-Rockwall Colonade and Cancer Survivors Plaza. Both of these beautiful plazas, along with the Mecom Fountain, are popular locations for wedding photographs; on Saturdays during the summer expect to see at least several brides and grooms with their families taking pictures here.

Hermann Park

Websites: Getting There: Three METRORail stops service the park. Museum District provides easy access to the museums at the north end of the park, along with the garden center, Mecom Fountain, and Sam Houston Statue. Hermann Park/Rice University stops near the center of the park, closer to the playground, one picnic area, and the main entrance to the zoo. Memorial Hermann/Houston Zoo stops just south of the park, close to the zoo's south entrance.

Hermann Park is in the heart of one of Houston's prettiest areas, and thanks to the private, non-profit Friends of Hermann Park organization, has experienced a major revitalization over the last few years. The park is home to several museums, the zoo, Miller Outdoor Theater (see separate journal entry), a miniature train, playgrounds, picnic areas, a golf course, lake, gardens, and more. The best time to enjoy the park's many venues is during the fall and spring, when sunny days with mild temperatures and lower humidity levels prevail. However, the park is very shady and many areas can be quite pleasant during the summer.
